Hi all. I finally got a chance to sit down with my new Dell Inspiron 6000 this weekend to get things tweaked a little bit.

I have done a reformat, repartition, reinstall Win XP Home. Replaced IE and Outlook with Firefox and Thunderbird. Installed Zone Alarm and Avast AV. Got the Linksys WRT54G set up and networked to the old desktop.

Now, when booting the Dell bloatware, I also lost a few useful items, such as PowerDVD. That was capably replaced with Media Player Classic. I also lost whatever program was included to burn CDs. I'm looking for a replacement for that. Also lost was the little Dell app that shows things on-screen like volume and screen brightness adjustments.

I've picked up Centrino Hardware Control for processor speed control and battery life, etc. I tried out StatBar and liked it too.

So, what I'm looking for are (freeware only!):

    CD burner replacement
App(s) for on-screen brightness and volume indication (either replacement Dell app or more functional StatBar)

    Any suggestions?

(BTW I actually enjoy typing on this keyboard as indicated by this long-winded post)

I think you need Dell Quickset for brightness and volume indication. Search Google for "Dell Quickset" and I'm sure you'll find something.

As for burning CDs, I've only used Nero on this computer. You could try CDBurnerXP Pro. I've heard from people who've used it that it was decent. Personally, I'd stick to Windows Media Player for burning CDs, if you don't want to pay.

There's always the Nero trial, but you probably don't care for that idea.

CDBurnerXP and DeepBurner are both free and work quite well for basic stuff.

Thanks. DeepBurner looks like it will work great. I don't need a high degree of functionality. Unfortunately the Sonic DL on Dell's site was a patch/upgrade only. D'oh!

    hey all,
I have a dell inspiron 700m and for some reason dell didnt make the quickset software for these laptops and when i try installing it it doesent let me. i was just wondering if anyone knows of any similar software to use instead. basically something that can set power schemes and show the volume\brightness level on the screen when i press the "fn" key.
    thanks in advance

Well, I just ordered a 700m. Do you guys recommend that I just uninstall the bloat that I don't want, or actually go all the way with a reformat?

I would just reformat if you are comfortable doing that.

Yeah, I am comfortable. I just didn't know if the driver situation would be a pain. Or is the Driver CD good enough?

Drivers were no problem for me. I just went through the process of creating a Windows CD and it apparently included all the appropriate drivers.
