    I've found that Handbrake or Vidcoder (based on Handbrake's code) are the easiest ways to transcode videos. They'll read any format that ffmpeg will, and have preset outputs for Apple products.

    I basically just want to pop in a dvd and make a movie for my cell phone. I said ipod because I figured it would get more responses. Im testing out handbrake right now. Thanks for the links and thank God for open source!

    you could also try a cuda accelerated program such as badaboom. since what your trying to do is convert a dvd to whatever your portable is the decode and encode would be gpu compatible which would make it a very fast conversion

    I used to really like Format Factory, but the ads killed it for me. Also, apparently there was a license violation and they are listed on FFmpeg's hall of shame. Other than that, Format Factory has a great number of conversion features, and nice that it's free of charge.
