My laptop came with Home Premium 32 bit, then I bought the Ultimate 32 bit upgrade disk. Is it possible to get an Ultimate 64 bit upgrade disk and use that to install the 64 bit version?

Or do I have to reinstall Home Premium and then get a 64 bit Home Premium disk? Also would a 64 bit version of Windows work on any laptop or do I need to get a specific CPU, etc.?

    Intel Core 2 CPU T7200
2 GB RAM (Might upgrade sooner later)

    It's a Dell XPS M1710 btw

What else do I have to provide?

I've done some more googling and the processor does in fact support 32 and 64 bit applications. Might have a look into this then.

I bought my new laptop with 64 bit vista. I haven't noticed a single difference between it and 32 bit vista other than it boots up much faster than my 32 bit PC monster (Q6600@3Ghz). I made sure there were 64 bit drivers for my printer. I'm seriously considering going 64 bit on my desktop as well so I can use my 4GB of ram properly.

You can't "upgrade" to a 64bit OS to a 32bit OS. You need a completely new disk. However, your 32bit license will work for the 64bit version of Vista.

One more thing, my Dell came with Home Premium 32 bit then I bought a Ultimate upgrade disk. If I do get the 64 bit which key would I need to use? Or would it not matter? (i.e. if I use the HP key it'll install HP 64 bit, and if I use the Ultimate key it'll install Ultimate 64 bit)

If Dell sends you the 64-bit HP disc, you should be able to use it to install Ultimate 64-bit by using the your Ultimate key. I think. I'm not sure actually. I don't remember telling the installer which edition I had. But maybe I did, I don't know....
