Anyone know where to pick up an upgrade for a decent price?![]()

Why do you want to "upgrade?" Is there some feature in Windows 7 Professional that is not available in Home Premium?

Ability to use more than 16gb ram for one
-
and why would you want to do that. 8gb is plenty for now and 16gb is more than enough. im lucky if ive used 6-8gb yet for heavy rendering of HD video.
-
For example for running a few vm's at once, do some heavy rendering, or just because you can? I don't think that you suspect there are no people who'd want to buy 32gb ram and do a windows upgrade because of that reason?
-
Unfortunately, Micro$oft charges an arm and a leg for such a simple upgrade.

I need it to utilise XP mode.

Well the way Windows 7 works is that all version are installed but the product key in used to activate the particular version. MS has a program called MS anytime upgrade and you can do this inside of Windows as there is an option. Google Anytime upgrade and it will give you instructions. That is the easy way. No if you have a copy of XP you can download Oracle's Virtual Toolbox and install XP in that virtual machine. One advantage XP mode has over Toolbox is it will allow applications to run seemlessly in Windows 7. Which mean if you have XP you can add the shortcut to the application to the Windows 7 desktop and it runs almost like it running in windows 7. Toolbox will allow you to put a XP shortcut on your desktop to launch Xp then once the XP virtual machin is up you can run the app. -
XP Mode isn't completely seamless - for one, it doesn't have the ability to associate file types with programs installed in the VM. For example, if you have Office 2010 installed in the Windows 7 host and Office 2003 installed in your XP VM, it's easy to get docx, xlsx and pptx to open in Office 2010 but there's no way to get classic doc, xls and ppt files to open with Office 2003 when you double click the file in Windows 7's Desktop or Windows Explorer.

I think you misunderstood what Orlbuckeye said. He said that the easiest way is to upgrade win7 to get the native XP mode built in (this is seamless). BUT if you don't want to spend money on upgrade and you have a copy of xp you can install it in VM, this obviously isn't seamless

If I have to mention either Newegg or Amazon would be where one should check first and then contact M$ for their upgrade pricing. There are a limited of sellers from those I mentioned that can offer upgrades with M$ being the main one that can only do a upgrade for you. -
You apparently missed the entire point of my post.

Best price will most likely be through an e-tailer. You might be able to find it at a decent price locally if it's on sale, but otherwise, the cost doesn't vary a whole lot.
Promotional/sale prices are your best bet, I think.
