I lost the ability to display hidden files and folders after installing and uninstalling an app recently. Even when I check "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" I still can't see any files and folders. Is there a registry setting that got confused that I can fix to get my hidden files and folders back?
System:
WinXP SP2

I'm not sure what has caused this problem, but I had it once on my old computer running XP and didn't know what caused it
After some researching I found a solution that involves editing the registry
I'll post it here if you want so you can try it and see if it works
Not sure if it is the same in Vista
Hope this helps -

Thanks Ray and Steve, kellys-korner script worked

What exactly you did, I am having the same problem, can you please elaborate.

He went to the site mentioned in an earlier post and sollowed tip #155
This post:
I didn't do that however
This is what I did to fix this problem when I had XP:
Go to the following registry key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Window s\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Adva nced\Folde r\Hidden\SHOWALL
Delete the value CheckedValue. (Its type should be REG_SZ and data should be 2.)
Create a new DWORD value called CheckedValue (same as above, except that the type is REG_DWORD). Modify the value data to 1 (0x00000001).
This should let you change the "Hidden Files and Folders" option.
This Pic should also help:

The REAL question is what is CAUSING this??? Why would installing some application cause these registry settings to be changed? Sounds like the application was dong some things you might not want it to do. What was the application? And have you done a THROUGH virus scan since? I would be worried about any app that turned this setting off.
Call me paranoid.

IMHO things like these are usually caused when people "obtain things the should buy without paying" *cough*cracks/keygens*cough*
You arr just asking for trouble by going down that road -
Paranoid.

Thanks. Every once in a while I manage to get the right answer.

I like all the theories. Actually, I paid for the software and I'm still using it. The software developer denied the software had anything to do with the problem ... anyway, I thought I could fix the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling but that didn't work. I'm just happy I found the solution here.
Thanks for the detailed post Rayyan! -

You still need to get to the bottom of this. Something has messed with your registry in a way that no well behaved application EVER should.

Thanks, I'd this problem once but my brother fixed it then, but now I can also fix it.

It was a virus, I had the same issue, and a google search revealed a sollution for it.

LOL... funny thread with all these comedians. But that's nice to know if it ever happens to me.

Sometimes people overlook the most simple and easiest solution of all : Do a system restore to a point in time when you didn't have this problem. Just a suggestion-- don't know if would have worked.
-
Yea, but some people have said this was caused by a virus, in which case doing a restore might not have helped, as the virus may have remained
Also, many people delete their restore points regularly, esp. on vista to free up HD space
It's still worth a try though, I always make a restore point before installing any program I have never used before
Lost ability to display hidden files and folders
