Had the T61 a few months now and superfetch has been turned off for sometimes which feeds readyboost most of its data. Just turned it back on today and the system feels snapier and outlook 2007 loads also in the blink of an eye, Word 2007 doesnt even display the loading screen its that quick.

Things like photoshop and paint shop pro also load a second or two faster, enjoying a snaper windows environment.

Wont be going back to XP thats for sure, no need to now.

Can it be? A thread actually praising vista?

Yeah glad you are enjoying it because I sure as hell am. Opera, Itunes, word and some other programs load up instantly for me too. Once vista gets acclimated to what you do it works great.

Just curious...why did you turn Superfetch off? Thats like one of Vista's better features, if not one of the best features.

When I was new to Vista, I was tweaking from guides on the internet which suggested turning it off. Back then didnt fully understand what it was all about.

Common understanding...I felt the same about Readyboost, that it was completely useless, but now I see how it can be useful at times. Superfetch is for sure very useful in Vista. A friend of mine told me that Vista without Superfetch will perform closer to XP, but with Superfetch on, more memory is cached for faster access to files/applications/etc.

Which is EXACTLY the problem with too many of the tweaking guides out there. They offer "instant gratification" without the explanation or often even the understanding of the ramifications of the tweak.

Your never going to stop people tweaking though! I find its all about trial an error to a certain extent, plus with tweaking you learn more about your system which you might have not known before.

and I think the majority of guides out there explain what the tweak does or how it is going to effect your system, and correct me if Im wrong arent tweaks about a bit of instant gratification?

Agreed. After Vista learns your usage it is pretty darn quick.

Yep..i love vista's superfetch...outlook, FF, and other apps open so quick I never see the welcome screen. I'm not sure if it's the superfetch or the turbo mem doing thejob

I empty the Prefetch folder every week during the maintenance. Does Vista store the SuperFetch information/data there? If not, then where does it store it?

I believe it does. If so, by emptying it you are forcing SuperFetch to redetermine your usage patterns and it will have to re-learn the best fit of apps and dll's to load.

See: Superfetch and Prefetch or Google search for "Prefetch folder" and Superfetch

+1, especially if you have 2+ GB RAM

You don't need 2+GB of RAM to run vista good. You barely need 1GB or ram. My 2GB is almost never used unless i am converting a movie.

that's because superfetch is caching your ram. With the same programs open with 2gb of ram..i usually had around 900mb free, however with 3gb of ram now, and same programs running, i have around 1200mb free...kinda weird
