I have 3GB and have been getting warnings to close some applications before i can play a song with WMP , when all i have running is 2 instances of Firefox with only 1 webpage on each, no tabs

I thought W7 used less memory than Vista

I had an issue with Win7 once where it wasnt a process or program talking up like 2 gb of ram, it was something in the very background... only solution was to format..

and no 7 does not use less memory, why should it? It use what your computer has (obviously here, there is a problem)

I thought the W7 OS required less memory to run, so there should be more left for running user software, and less chance of getting a low memory message.

It does require less for its core needs. It sounds like you have some memory leak issue. You might want to do some forensics with Sysinternals Process Explorer.

Did you disable your pagefile or something?

Anyway, open up task manager (shift-ctrl-esc) and go to the Processes tab and see if there's a process that's eating all your memory.

I have only 2 gb, and Vista, and I don't run into problems like you describe, even with like 25 firefox windows and other stuff.
