Virus softwre in particular, which one uses the least amount of memory: Norton, McAfee, Track (something or another, Dell supported), or is there some other that I did not mention? I heard a few of these programs when running use quite a lot of memory. I, addition to the hacks and tricks I want to make sure I'm using complementary software.

Definitely not Norton. I had Norton Internet Security 2007 installed on my laptop and it almost quadrupled my boot time. I have Zone Alarm Internet Security at the moment and it run very smoothly. My only gripe is running a full system scan takes hours.

Avira AntiVir and Avast are good on memory.

AVG. i think that takes the least.
truth be told mcafee is a start up hog. saved two of my other laptops once. -
I use AVG free edition. Sometimes it doesn't update automatically. It uses very low memory. Also the user interface is not clear. You have to open multiple windows to change settings. But it does its job quite good.
Low memory software
