Oh God forbid MS take down a website where many people get updates for pirated copies.

To people who have LEGITIMATE copies and use that website, 'tis a pity. I know some people hate having the idea of WGA (I do not care myself, and find it a "necessary evil").

A "necessary evil?" I see Microsoft has had their way with you. It's funny, every other OS out there manages to go without this kind of thing, including OS X, which is wildly pirated. But yeah, I guess it is "necessary" for Microsoft...

    Doesn't bother me much.
When installing Windows, I always slipstream the latest updates from here. And after that, I just use Windows Update to get new updates as they're released.

Maybe I'm just lucky but I just don't install the updates and I've had no real problems as far as I can remember... hell most of my machines don't even have SP2.

Widely pirated. Why would a company willingly LOSE money that they could have?

It's not about being greedy. If a company wishes to protect their product (Now music is a whole different issue), they should do so. I think that MS should lower their prices on new OS. Until then then that's what OEM versions of OSes are for which can be purchased for much cheaper . Now MS makes a ton of money, sure but does it give them less of a right to protect their product. Like in China, it's hard to find a legal copy over there. Pirating an OS is probably one of the few things.

Haha, so true :p. Ignorance is bliss, eh ;)?
    My sentiments exactly...

I just did a fresh XP install, and all the patching didn't take me more than 45 minutes to an hour max.

I fix computers for a living and I cannot tell you how many people who have dialup connections who desperately need something like autopatcher

For someone with a broadband connection and a legitimate windows disk, it doesn't matter that much, or for someone who is slipstreaming its fine, but for someone on a 33.6kb modem who doesn't update simply because they lack the bamdwitdh this is a horrible decision that compromises their machines and everyone else with legitimate installs....a large group of dial up pc-zombies is still deadly

    Boo on Microsoft

Except people on 33.6kb modems aren't on the net all day and aren't downloading lots of stuff. They aren't likely to get infected or to be targeted for infection.

Instead of millions of spam emails a day, a modem user will probaly be limited to a few thousand maliciously sent spam emails lol.

People say MS should lower their price but a very small percentage of sales (single digit probably) actually come from retail sales. Most come from new PC's with the OS installed or from major corporations. Those two make up the vast majority of sales and in both cases the price payed is way below retail.

Then you have OEM sales for people that are in the know....and student sales. So Vista/Windows for the vast majority is cheap. OS X is cheaper retail wise but I would bet per capita they sale alot more in the retail space since you cant load it on anything but apple hardware, and no large corporations are purchasing it, and there is no OEM version of Tiger.

You guys do realize that it is possible to download from WindowsUpdate with a cracked WGA. Autopatcher still will not let you install updates that require WGA. Don't worry. You can still download at least August 2007 Autopatcher.
