I'm not sure why, but my system has lost all ability to extract thumbnails for mkv files when it could do so previously. I have the latest CCCP beta installed (for the TrueHD support) and I've tried the solution suggested on the CCCP webpage. Problem is the dll file that's supposed to register correctly isn't doing so but I still have the "explorer integration" option available in Haali media splitter and it's set to extract thumbnails.

Something is obviously borked since mp4 thumbnails are showing correctly. I'm not sure if it's something I enabled/disabled in an attempt to get TrueHD to work on my system.

Can you play the mkv files in WMP? They should thumbnail if so. Not sure what else you could try.

With the Haali media splitter, the thumbnail for MKV files just show the text "Matroska" for me, not the actual movie clip. I had also enabled thumbnail extraction.

Hit and miss, one of the files I tried plays properly but with no subtitles loading as usual. The other plays the audio fine but the video freezes 2 seconds into the playback.

I'm not sure what you're referring to here, but the two files I tried here show everything as per normal (audio selection, subtitle selection, track seeking etc.).

It seems my problem hasn't got worse. Now I have no thumbnails whatsoever for mkv and mp4 files. Anyone have any idea how my PC can "forget" how to extract thumbnails?

My MKV thumbnails are showing correctly, however I have that above option set to 'No.'

Try do a reset of CCCP settings (tick the appropriate checkbox on the second page of the CCCP Settings application and click apply and then yes) and then install the DivX H.264 decoder (instructions below) for thumbnails.
    DivX H.264 - CCCP

I also have my MKV file association to CCCP's MPC-HC, but I don't know if that makes any difference.

Done the above, but still no thumbnails. To add insult to injury, the new DivX codec does a poorer job at rendering with hardware acceleration than the previous one used by CCCP.

Since the solution isn't working, any advice how to uninstall the DivX codec and reenable the old settings?

Just uninstall it through add/remove programs, and then tick reset and apply on the second page of the CCCP settings application.

All done, but it seems I'll have to live without video thumbnails for the next few months until I purchase a new laptop at this rate.

I guess just wait till Haali Media Splitter gets the shell extension back.

I have tried everything to do with Haali and KLite but the only thing that finally worked was the Divx codec pack.

    I am running Win7 x64

Have you tried resetting your thumbnail cache through disk cleanup?

Twice. The first time I could still see thumbnails for mp4 files, the second time I lost even the mp4 thumbnails. I can still see AVI thumbnails fine because Windows does that differently and correctly.

Raising a 3 month old thread but the problem remains the same. The new official version of the CCCP pack is out and I have it installed however I still don't see any thumbnails for mkv and mp4 files. Is the Haali shell extension still borked for Vista 32-bit?

Damn, what was wrong with it before requiring temporary removal from the codec pack at this moment?

It hasn't just been removed from CCCP. It has been removed from Haali's website.

Back to waiting for a stable thumbnail extractor in the meantime then.
