Is there any software to compress MP3 files.
Thanks.

Could use something like Cheetah Converter to put them into .wma format which is about 1/2 size of .mp3.

Yeah, WMA at 64kbps offers quality comparable to MP3 at 128kbps. Many portable devices and DVD players support WMA also. The downside? Microsoft's crippled "copy protection" makes it hard to convert WMA to anything else later on.
Another option is mp3PRO which also offers quality comparable to MP3 at half the bitrate. Nero can encode/decode mp3PROs, and there's a plugin for Winamp that allows you to play mp3PRO files. The upside? These files will be supported by any software/hardware player that plays MP3. The downside? Without special mp3PRO support they will sound like 22KHz MP3s, i.e. really bad. And there are next to no portable devices that support mp3PRO, so basically it's a format that flopped.
