Ok, so it seems that every time I play HD content with MPC-HC it crashes Aero, and it's really getting old. It doesn't happen as much with SD content but it still happens. I've tried the x64 version and 32bit version. The x64 version randomly freezes and the x32 crashes Aero. And by crashing Aero, I'm talking about having to log out and back in to have a normal desktop. Anyone have any ideas?

I assume it's the Sony in your sig? Have you updated your graphics drivers lately? That sounds very much like it's an issue with the GPU.

At first that's what I thought too so I tried 187.81 and 190.something and both were WHQL certified and not beta drivers. Neither worked. The 187.81 is the latest from Sony. It just seems like MPC is getting all whiney here lately. I'm also open to other player suggestions!

By crashing Aero I mean the "Desktop Composition" wiggs out brings all my windows out of the taskbar and takes away glass, and the aero window animations and all of that. I can't re-enable Desktop Composition until logging out then back in. It's almost as if it crashes Windows Explorer... but it doesn't, it just makes everything ugly, then MPC-HC itself crashes. With regard to what you said, do either of those work well with HD video? I'll try that though.. thanks!

The above issue wouls sound like you're using overlay, though weird how mpc-hc actually crashes..

Do you mean it does that thing where you get a balloon from the tray icons that says 'the colour scheme has been changed to windows 7 basic'?

They are both designed for it.

It is possible that overlay and drivers (controlling the overlay, too, of course) could cause that issue.

I don't have those problems with MPC myself. Maybe you could try updating or replacing your video codecs. The codecs you are using could be causing those crashes.

That's it, except a balloon never comes up. It's like 7 still thinks Aero is running because when I go to personalization to try and re-enable it, I click on the default Windows 7 theme with the glass and transparency and it makes the sound but won't re-enable composition. But thanks for the suggestions!

See, a while back I remember updating my codec pack, but I don't remember uninstalling the old one before hand so you're probably right. I'm going to do a complete uninstall and reboot then install the CCCP codec pack like namaiki was saying. Thanks guys!

Try to locate and run mplayerc.exe then choose View -> Options -> Tweaks and make sure "don't use XP-theming on player controls" is checked. MPC-HomeCinema.1.3.1249.0.(x86).exe is a 32bit version release.

I'm assuming you already have the 64bit version of FFDShow-Mpeg4 installed which is from Jan 12, 2010.

I have this same issue on my HTPC that has old ATI x1250 IGP. Will try Twiz57's solution as soon as I can.

I have used WMP for now :(
