I need some suggestions for some good video editing software (either freeware or otherwise, though obviously preferably the former). Specifically, I'll be working with relatively long (2-3 hours or more) MPEG video clips of less-than-HD resolution. Would Lightworks be a good tool to try?

Avidemux is very good. Supported formats are listed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avidemux#Supported_formats

For MPEG look at Womble products.
