I have MS Office 2000 small business edition, if i'm building a new laptop, with XP, any reason I can't use it? Trying to shave costs off the Dell Vostro I'm working on with the $500 discount. (P.S. obviously it won't work with Vista!) :)

MS Office 200 works fine with my xp pro. Not sure if "Small business edition" makes any difference. But, if it dosn't, your better off buying office on its own, instead of buying it from dell :p.

MS Office 2000 is outdated, grab Office 2003/2007 or Openoffice.

Works fine for me. Launches instantly (P4 2.66GHz/512MB/5400RPM PATA 1MB cache hard drive), and i'm familiar with the Word program.

assuming you live in the US, Newegg has free shipping on Office 2007 and only $119. Also, i think dell preinstalls it on the computer, but this is good for 3 liscense installs. ;)

Office 2000 will work just fine with XP - I used it with XP for four years. If you've already got it, there's no reason not to use it.

If you're considering Office 2007, I'd buy it somewhere other than Dell. That way you'll have the physical media for reinstalls and three licenses. Is it worth $150 if you've already got Office 2000? Probably not. For all the hype, the ribbon toolbar is only better than the menu (and shortcut menus) of Office 2000 part of the time. A slight improvement overall, but not worth $150.

With office software, when a software came out doesn't matter so long as it does what you want well and is compatible with other people's software, both of which Office 2000 is.

Yup what they all said. Of course if you're working with people who are already saving in .docx or if in case you feel that you will need and want the new features and compatibility some time in the future, then you should think of getting Office '07. Otherwise, you should stick to what you have and use the money for something else. As the adage goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If it works for you and it fits your needs, Office 2000 should still run fine. [On a side note: Are you sure it won't run in Vista?]

Personally, I have both O o_O and [a recently reinstalled] Office XP [2002]. Heck, Office XP still works with MS Update and updated itself to Service Pack 3.

I have Office 2000 Pro running on 2 XP Pro desktops, an XP Pro laptop and a Vista desktop and a Vista Laptop. Runs fine on all 5. I don't want to have to teach the Admiral any changes to 2007 so I stay comfortably with 2000.
