I didn't see this deal on here yet, so I thought I'd share it. If you are a student in higher-education with a valid institution e-mail address, you can buy Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate edition from Microsoft ( http://www.theultimatesteal.com) for $59.95 (this is not available everywhere in the world - only U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Italy, and Spain). You can read Microsoft's press release about it here.
Cheers!

Nifty!!!!!

Cool but the only redeemable part of '07 IMO is OneNote.
I installed the trial and then promptly uninstalled it. New UI, big deal. Not even worth pirating in my opinion.
*has a legitimate copy Office 2003*
But I'll be damned to say that's not a good deal. Microsoft is doing this right. -
Actually, on the contrary I've found Office 2007 to have some very nice advanced features. Maybe some will use them, other won't.
Sure, the UI is a little new...but after updating it to the latest files it is definitely as good or better than Office 2003 IMHO.
For people that have Office 2003, try to find an evaluation version (or install it yourself without a cd-key...which gives you a 30 or 60 day trial) and check it out. See if you like it, see if you don't.
For people who need Office (as in a new copy)...might as well get Office 2007. -
Definitely doing it.
-
Agreed....
As I beta tested Office 2007 and IMHO it is the best version of Office in a long time... The new UI will be a turn off to some people and takes some getting used to, but once you do you quickly learn that you can do stuff in Office that existed in 2003, but you never knew was there. That new UI really pulls office up out of the rungs and makes it a program and works for you and not the other way around...
This is a great deal from MS and I'll spread the joy around campus
-
Fair enough. I just found that the compatibility thing was quite annoying :|
-
Yes, the default format of, say, an MS Word document is now .docx and will not open properly in editions before 2007. However, it is fairly simple to save a file in, again, say Word 2007 as .doc.
That being said, I beta-tested Office 2007 and hated it... I didn't give it more than a couple of hours before tossing it. But I eventually came back to it, and after getting used to it, found it to be much more efficient. I've known other people that were the same way - hated it at first, but then got used to it and now love it. I guess that's the nature of change. Love it or lump it, I'm grabbing it for sixty bucks. -
thank you
-
Haha, I was just about to post this. Office 2007 Ultimate usually sells for $619, so this is a hell of a deal!
-
Something I'm curious about: Many new laptops come with a pre installed trial copy of Office Professional 2007. So, does that mean in order to avail of the .edu $59 Ultimate edition, you would first have to uninstall the pre installed trial Professional version?
Or can the (laptop) trial Professional version be activated with the .edu Ultimate $59 edition license?
Somehow I doubt it.
Yet, it does seem such a pain to have to uninstall one version just so as to reinstall another! -

Very cool. Thanks for the heads up.
-
so when does this actually become available since i just entered my email ???
-
On the webpage there was a countdown timer
-
My school sells it for 30 bucks. Some schools even issue it for FREE. But nontheless, a very good deal.
-
Wow that's a good deal. I'm actually thinking of buying that.
-
only for students and supposely running until end April'08
it is a heck of a price, no more excuse to pirate (but then i might be wrong
)
cheers ... -

There is an addin for earlier versions of Office that allow them to open the new .docx, .xlsx etc types of files. It works for all the way back to Office 2000 versions!

You get it via download. I just downloaded it and I'll install it when I get home
What a great deal.
-
It says you can also order the CD's for a small additional fee.
Can someone check how much more it is for the CDs/DVDs? (At work right now so I can't check for myself). -
It says you can request a DVD for a nominal cost, but I didn't see that option at any point during check-out... all I saw was the option for an extended-download plan. Maybe they don't have their website "finalized" yet?
-
That's possible.
I'd be interested in getting a DVD copy instead of just a download. I'll have to check it out when I get home. -
This makes me feel like I wasted the $80 ish I spent two weeks ago on the Home and Student edition. That was after a discount through my employer, but still substantially more expensive than this Ultimate. Hmm... so tempting... mostly for Access, although I already have Access '03 through my school. I can probably get Access '07 this school year. Bah. Stupid Microsoft, how dare they come up with a better deal than I had
-
like Steve Jobs and his iPhone discount/new pricing, right?
cheers ... -
It said on the order page that you can purchase the CD's/DVDs for a nominal cost, but I have not actually seen where. Maybe they just haven't added the option in yet. I don't know, but for whatever reason, it's not there. I downloaded Office already and the 2 executables each fit on a CD, so I'll probably just burn them to a CD and forget about the "official disks".
-
I'd like to say "Don't worry about it, there will always be a better deal", but not this time. This is really a phenomenal deal, and at the same time, a very smart marketing move by Microsoft. What student would pay $670 for Office? None. Students generally either don't buy it, pirate it, or just use an older version. This way Microsoft is selling legitimate copies in a market where they really don't sell anything at all.
-
Do you guys think its worth getting to replace Open Office?
-
Heh, yeah, I probably will buy it. It really is too good to pass up. I'm not really mad or anything, the timing is just aggravating. I'm done with my job tomorrow, and I wouldn't be able to get the employee discount after that, so I didn't want to wait and risk not getting the deal I already had. These are the times when a crystal ball would save me a few bucks.
Tailic, yes, this is definitely worth getting to replace Open Office. I've used Open Office almost exclusively for the past two years, but MS Office (especially '07, in my opinion) is much better. -
I can't get it yet. You have to use the .edu email address and I forgot my password about 3 years ago. Maybe now I will
-
what school's giving it away for free? that's pretty crazy...
-
Awesome find! I'm definitely getting this!
-
This would make perfect sense to do..
Students are the most likely people to pirate Office 2007 (need it for school), so why not give them a discount to lure them into buying it instead of stealing it. What student would want to buy $600 software, let alone $100 software, if it's so easy to just download it from the internet? -
Wow that's insane. I thought it was a scam or something. I think i'm most likely going to buy this once that DVD option becomes available.
-
Well i'm not sure if i'm eligible oO. I'm going to be a freshman in UCLA, but I don't understand what the .5 credits part means...I'm enrolled in 3 classes for my first quarter.
EDIT: .5 course load, not .5 credits. I'm not sure what that means. -
On the order page where you fill in your info, it says you need to be enrolled in 0.5 credit hours. So basically, they're just trying to say that you have to actually be taking a class at the university.
You definitely qualify. Don't worry about it. -
i know this is very cheap but most people are still going to go for the pirate copy. why pay for something when you can get it for free?
-
Because it's illegal.
-
I'd have like it but I'm not in College yet -_-. I'll just stick with my fully genuine-pass tests Office 07 Enterprise copy
Other than the promotion, office pro is $150 with studen rebate in Canada. Vista HP UPG is also like $70 -
I messaged Microsoft about getting the physical copy of 2007 Office Ultimate from this promotion. I'll post their response if I get one.
-
~~CHECK WITH YOUR UNIVERSITY IT DEPT FIRST!!!!!!!!!!~~~~~~~~~
That's funny - any student paying for office 07 is nuts. If you go to your campus IT dept it is completely free! (not completely, you pay for it in your "computer and networking fee" thrown into you tuition)
I picked up a copy of office 07 enterprise edition and vista ultimate from my IT office last week
-
where the hell are all you people going? free office enterprise and vista ultimate? all my uni offers is a internet security CD which frankly doesn't have jack on it.
-
I go to Pitt. I think larger universities SHOULD offer quite a bit of software as opposed to a community college.
I dunno.... I thought it was standard stuff. -
guess not. i'm going to uc davis, by the way, if u were insinuating i was at a community college.
-
As far as I know, UC Davis does not provide a free copy of Office or Windows OS to the students. Software there in the bookstore can be even more expensive than some internet vendors. On the other hand, those who can get software free from the universities probably have paid it with their tuition.
-
No, I was not insinuating that you go to a comm college (there isn't anything wrong with that, either).
That is the whole purpose of microsoft academic licensing. IMO, your schools aren't doing what they are supposed to be doing IF you pay ANY type of computer/networking fee and do not have access to a free or very small fee software library.
Shoot, I can pick up a copy of Adobe CS3 for approx $150..... -
Okay thanks. I'll go ahead and order it when the physical DVD option is available.
-
Here's the response I got:
"Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Student Hero online store.
Unfortunately, the backup DVD for Microsoft Student Hero is not currently
available.
We are looking to have the backup DVD available soon. Please contact us
at a later date.
We apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please reply to this
e-mail."
So I guess we can expect a dvd option soon. -
Is this vista only?
-
No, any fairly recent Microsoft OS should be fine.
-
Purdue offers it at academic discount pricing, we pay about $35 (+/- I don't remember the exact price) for one copy of Vista Ultimate and $35 (+/-) for one copy of Office 2007. This is because Purdue feels it costs too much to cover the full price themselves...cheap-os!
But still, $35-40 for that is a good steal.
MS Office 2007 Ultimate for $59.95!
