I purchased the "Ultimate Steal" deal from Microsoft and loaded it on my Inspiron 1720 w/ Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1 but Word crashes every time I use it. I cannot click on a word attachment to open the word documents--they are .doc files; I have to save them then use File-->Open. Even when they open successfully the application usually crashes. Here's the dump which I have no clue how to interpret:

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
    Application Name: WINWORD.EXE
    Application Version: 12.0.6308.5000
    Application Timestamp: 47e547c5
    Fault Module Name: mso.dll
    Fault Module Version: 12.0.6320.5000
    Fault Module Timestamp: 485ae817
    Exception Code: c0000005
    Exception Offset: 0003a9ed
    OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
    Locale ID: 1033

    Additional information about the problem:
    LCID: 1033
    Brand: Office12Crash
    skulcid: 1033

Any help you can provide is certainly appreciated.

Have you attempted to uninstall/reinstall? This is a pretty common fix for application errors. Before uninstalling, grab your registration information, will make re-installation easier.

Possible fix, stolen from microsoft.com forums:

    rename "data" to "1data" HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

I had a similar issue and found it was because my default printer was a USB HP Printer and I was on a laptop without it being plugged in. Once I changed the default, no more issues.
