Does anyone know how to type the symbol "y bar" (the letter y with a line over it) in MS word? Basically like this ā but with a y instead of an a.

Try going to Insert on the Ribbon, and then all the way on the right hand side (default) click the symbol button > More Symbols. It should be there somewhere.
edit: To better answer you question. You could hold the Alt key and type 1263 on the number pad to type ӯ. -

Once you find your y bar symbol, if you want to have it automatically inserted into your text as you're typing, (assuming you're using MS Office 2007), from any MS Office page (i.e. any Word doc) click the Windows logo, and at the bottom of the screen, Word Options. Then select Proofing, and AutoCorrect Options, and Math AutoCorrect. In that section, you have two boxes "Replace" and "With": one to insert the word(s) you are replacing, and the other to insert the symbol. In your case, you would put the text you want replaced with the symbol, into the "Replace" box, and insert the y bar symbol into the "With" box. Voila!
