Why does MS Word 2007 in Vista not allow me to save a file to a external USB drive, even thought I am the administrator?

I don't know. I personally haven't tried but why don't you just save the file and move it to the usb drive?

You can do it. Check whether your USB drive is write protected (some devices have a hardware switch).
