I made a mistake and need some serous help plz. I was following these directions so that I could customize my desktop and some where made a drastic or I think is a drastic mistake.
I renamed the 3 files that it says to rename from .dll to .old. I then downloaded what I think/thought was the right link for my comp. I chose Vista/SPO and the first link. I checked my system and it didn't say anything about having SP1 even thou its a new laptop and when I check Dell it says they r selling the M1530 with SP1. So since it didnt say anything about SP1 i chose the above stated for my 32bit. Here is where I think i made the mistake. I downloaded the file straight into C:windows/system32 and I think i should have just downloaded it separate and physically put the files into the system32 folder. So after this I restarted my Comp. like instructed and now once i try to log in it gives me an error saying that UXTheme.dll (i think that's the name what ever one i was suppose to change i forget what the exact name is right now) cannot be located. So it loads a black screen. It says something about reinstalling this system or program may help, again i forget exactly what it said sorry. So how do i fix this? If it would load i could just go in and rename the file back to .dll but it wont load anything but a black screen. PLZ help

pop in your vista disc (i hope dell gave you one) and do a repair

Try restarting your computer into safe mode. Before Windows starts up, hold the F8 key, and it will give you a list of options as to how to start up Windows. Choose Safe Mode and hopefully it will start correctly; then it will be easy to copy the file back so Regular Mode will be working again.

There are two links under SP0, 6.0.6000.16386_XX.rar and 6.0.6000.16386_XX_AMD64.rar, which is the one you downloaded?

I tried safe mode right after it happend and it opens with a black screen as well. they did give me a vista disk but i dont think it will work because i tried puting in a drivers disk and it would not show anything. Maybe with the vista disk it will read something but i dont know and will have to try it.
haOkepa: I chose SPO: 6.0.6000.16386_xx.rar I assumed the other one was for 64bit? -
You get a UAC prompt if you try to download directly into windows\system32.
You should of downloaded into a seperate directory and copied the files manually. If system restore doesn't cut it, you should find a Vista CD and try the repair option. If that doesn't cut it, find linux CD that will allow you to copy the three DLL files into your system32 folder. Good luck
This is a poster child case for System restore. Please use it in the future.
BTW, your drivers disk won't work. Look for a Vista disk. -
You might try this..
Boot into safe mode with command prompt. When you see the command prompt, type ren shsvcs.old shsvcs.dll, enter, ren themeui.old themeui.dll, enter, ren uxtheme.old uxtheme.dll, enter. Force a restart then. -
Also, there's another "noob" way of doing it (its what i did the first time it hapnd to me)-
When you get the black screen after booting windows press the Win key + R. This should open up the Run window. Click on Browse and it opens up a dialoge box. Then browse to C:/Windows/System32. Find the dll's that you renamed before, here, and again rename 'em back to their originals (i.e. uxtheme.dll.old to uxtheme.dll, etc). After renaming the 3 dll's, reboot, and all should be back to normal. -
Now i'm not familar with system restore. I've never had to use it or create one so could some one give a quick run down so that when i reattempt this and it happens again (god forbid not) that i know how to fix it with the system restore?
Thanks again for all the help ladies and gentlemen. -

You can boot from the Vista DVD(make sure that you set the BIOS to have the CD/DVD listed first to boot from), then select you language and press Next, choose "Repair your computer", select the OS your want to repair and click Next(usually one unless youre dual booting), there are few recovery tools listed under the System Recovery Options, and one of them is System Restore.

I got the system to work fine now with the Comm. Prompt that was recomended. I was just curiouse on how a system restore point would work with out being about to even log on? Do's the Vista disk allow u to do that. I think that is what you meant by there are few recovery tools under system recovery options. Or am i wrong agian? It happens often

System restore is also an option using a Vista boot CD.
Your Dell should of came with a Vista CD. The seperate Drivers CD is not it.
Glad you got it fixed either way. -
