I am trying to fix my roommate's computer, which we previously thought was beyond repair, but the other day I reset the MBR and now it boots again. Problem is, whatever problem(s) it still has is a real bugger. The MFT is corrupt, and no matter what chkdsk I run it stays corrupt. The paging file has also been turned off, and it won't turn back on. What's more, I am unable to enable any sort of virus protection. I did, however, get it to run a boot time scan. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix any of these problems?

delete the partitions and reformatt and see what happens then.
-
boot with the OS cd and reinstall the OS
(assuming this is an old computer?) -

I'm not usually a proponant of formatting, but this sounds like an instance where it's the way to go. Just back up as much as you can first.
