Is there any good free software with which I can create DVD movies out of my AVIs.

My DVD player CAN play AVI and non-DVD formats, but it doesn't support all of them.
For instance not all AVIs use the same codecs and the DVD player doesn't recognize all AVIs.

I do not want to waste my time converting between AVIs, MPGs, etc... because firstly the quality becomes worse and there is no guarantee that the DVD player will support those formats either. So I just want to convert them to DVD format...

Is there any freeware that can do that with windows XP?

If you have access to any computer that has Vista, Windows Vista actually comes with a program called DVD Maker, allowing you to drag and drop videos, add menus, then finalize as a DVD. Windows 7 will also undoubtedly have this, and it's probably already present in the beta.

EDIT: I'm sorry, that probably didn't help. You seem to be quite pro-XP, so here's my second attempt at helping.

This is a nice tutorial to use Movie Maker to burn movies to DVD.

FAVC, DVD Flick, AVS2DVD are three free ones that work.
