Norton Ghost works pretty well, and I heard that Acronis TrueImage (I think that is the name) might be or have already released a freeware version of their software.

i think the easiest way is to just to make backups of my my documents folder every now and then. if i download a program I make sure to keep the install program for it, etc.

i have my files organized well so it is easy to backup just on an external HDD or something.

also i like to use the Itunes library backup to save any playlists etc. i have made

Cool, I think I am just going to stick to using my external drive and just copying my documents everyone in a while over to it instead of using windows backup. Thanks everyone.

@ circa86: Yes, I love to save my downloaded programs, it saves soooo much time when you have to reboot!

    I do two things,

    1. Copy all my Documents onto an external hard drive (I moved the "My Documents" folder onto my D partition and then can just use that partition for all my personal data)

    2. Backup my C drive regularly (windows + Programs) using Norton Ghost.

This way I have all my personal documents saved if I need them, and I have a backup of the Windows partition so I don't have to reinstall everything should the machine crash.

MS Backup will work with External - Server end Yosemite software - vote against Norton - I personally am not a fan of ANY Norton Products and yes Nero does come with with a Backup utility - also have not used it -

yes it makes it so easy to do a reformat, I have such a big collection now, and what is great is that most of them will just auto update themselves and you are good to go.

and it is really important for me to have back ups of my photos and films etc. Premier Files, PSD files, etc. etc. Maya.

One has to decide how much is this info worth to you. What would you have WISHED you would have done if it is lost.

I know a guy that just had a computer fail and he turned it into HP and they reformatted his drive (thought the drive was NOT the problem. he hadnt backed up baby pictures for a year!! I have seen a guy at my job lose 2 hard drives in one day. Info was recovered but at 1500 dollars!.

Sooooo, I always make sure stuff is backed up in 2 places. I back up to external drives (2 of them.) I use Ghost to make an image of my whole drive, and I also manually dump documents/pics/vids/music/program files, to those drives. So really my stuff lives in 2 backup places and on each place in 2 forms.

    Paranoid? Maybe.

I had been keeping 3 copies of my data on 3 different physical drives and never backed up my os. Now I have my primary (working) data and a backup. I also keep an image of the os. All backups are on an external drive. Eventually I will again keep 2 copies of the backups.

Thanks everyone. I am sticking to my external HD, as well as keeping all data current on both my laptop and desktop.

BTW, I saw the windows briefcase thing. How does it work. Could I drag a big folder between lappy and desktop and will it sync all files to the most current ones? Thanks.

Iv been using Acronis TrueImage in Vista and it works quite well. I used it when I copied data around to install my boot drive.
