As it stands now with Windows Vista if I put down the lid and unplug the battery, my computer stays awake for the period of time that it would normally take to go to sleep if the system was in idle in battery.

I would like the laptop to immediately go to sleep or hibernate if it goes to battery power and the lid is down, is this possible?

Hmmm, not seeing anything in Windows Mobility Center related to that. And I have set the laptop to sleep when the lid is closed. But what I want is the laptop to sleep when the lid is already closed and the AC power is THEN unplugged.

This is not possible with Vista. You can only change the brightness and/ or sleep/ hibernate after a specified time or change the button configuration.

What is the use of laptop going to sleep/ hibernate after switching to battery power?

    Untrue.

Go to Power Options, either through the Control Panel or Mobility Center. You should see the three main power profiles of your system in the main window. The defaults are "Balanced", "Power saver", and "High performance". Click the "Change plan settings" link for whichever power profile you wish to use. On the next window click the "Change advanced power settings" link. Scroll down and open the "Power buttons and lid" option. Open up "Lid close action", and change the "On battery:" setting to Sleep.

This setting will only affect the specific power profile you edited. You can edit all your profiles if you want it to be ubiquitous.

You didn't get the OP's need fully.
I was not talking about the "lid close action". The OP wanted auto sleep/ hibernate on switching to battery power.
When you unplug the AC power, go to sleep/ hibernate. How will you set this in power options?

    Edit: Read it now.

    Yes, a little misunderstanding.
