A clean install of Vista from an original DVD (pre SP1) starts off with 80 or so updates to install.
Any problem in letting them all install in one go ? How long should they take ?
Had a play around with this the other day on a system and it seemed to freeze on one update .net framework 3.5 Left it for 30 minutes and still nothing, HDD just in a rhythmical pattern. Did a forced shutdown and it said configuring updates do not power off etc. When rebooted this .net update not there ?
Thanks

Manually download and install SP2 first, then go to MS Update.
You can also manually download .Net and get that done before hitting the update site. -
net framework 3.5 does take a long time...30 minutes is not an outrageously long time depending on your computer

Thanks for that Gerryf19. It just had that "I'm stuck in loop" feel to it. I'd like to think MS know the correct order to install stuff, and that it sorts itself out. Might try again. Will do an Acronis image of the clean Vista install too so don't have to go through it all again.
SP2... can you do that ? isn't SP1 needed first ? -

Interesting...thanks. Probably give it another go in the next few days. How long did all the updates take to install ?

Yes, the automatic update installs updates in the correct order automatically. Multiple restarts might be needed to complete the whole process until no more updates are found after a reboot.
To be able to install SP2, SP1 has to be installed already.
You can also use c't offline update ( Wikipedia:c't):

Thanks Christoph, I'd never heard of that.
Been reading various posts on here and what I think I am going to do is clean install Vista, but not activate it immediately. This will allow me to take my time, make sure it's all working properly etc. I have my present OS as an Acronis file so can come back to this at any time.
Thanks again -
Agreed, Vista SP2 has cumulative updates in case that you missed any.

So, better late than never, I'll add my voice to the chorus - download and keep handy on CD/DVD SP1 and SP2 (and the latest .NET framework). When you go to do a reinstallation from that pre-SP1 disk, do the installation, then immediately install the service packs and the .NET framework before you let the system anywhere's near a network connection. Once that's done, let it call Momma Gates up and finish out the chore with any post-SP2 updates.
Many Updates. Whats best method from a clean install from pre SP1 disc.
