My Vista Inspiron 6400 arrived today! I tried to install Norton Internet Security 2006, but lo and behold, it didn't work, which means I'll have to invest in 2007 in the near future. But in the meantime, I decided I'd register for the 30 day free trial of McAfee that came with the laptop, and want to ask your opinion on how effective McAfee is as an anti-malware program.

Norton is better

I would stick with McAfee.
I had Norton for awhile and from my personal experience with it I will never buy it again. The LiveUpdate got messed up and would never take my subscription and if you uninstall Norton in the wrong order, it freezes your computer on start up. Plus Norton takes up a lot of system resources. I believe my version of McAfee has 4 processes running (virus scanner, firewall and another one). -

I have used McAfee VirusScan for years without serious problems. I recently tried McAfee 2007 and found it significantly increased CPU utilisation because, I think, it has expanded beyond its area of competence. So I've gone back to McAfee 2006 and use ZoneAlarm as the firewall.
