Anyone have suggestions on getting this to run faster on startup. Its the only thing I have to wait on, everything else finishes pretty quickly.

Uninstall and install AVG 8 (Free). All the big name suites are very slow and resource heavy, avg 8 is a new build and is up there with nod32, etc. but it is FREE
-
McAfee catches everything on the spot. AVG 8 seems to have a downside with it's free version has no firewall.
-
I wouldn't recommend AVG 8, for a free AV it's Avast or Avira.

Correct, AVG 8 is only an anti-virus, there is a paid version...To supplement the firewall you can use ZoneAlarm or Comodo, depending on which ever won't crash your computer first.
@ Smooth: Are you running Avast in Vista? I had terrible issues, huge security holes, etc. with the vista version from early August. I even had occasional memory leaks and the gui is lacking reminding me of AVG 7 almost, at least for me. I have found that with AVG it alerts me immediately to a security issue, compared to a delayed response in avast. I was testing it with some tojan dummies, and they could fully execute and set before I would get an update. If there is a latest, better build, I will definitely try it. -

right now i'm running avast and vista x64 and it is ok the internet browsing has definatly got slower by 3 seconds each page
but other then that it is fine
avira is what i would recommend 2nd if u already had a firewall and web scanning and other securty features on your computer.
other than that avast for free is number one.
if you want to pay for you antivirus the best i found for the price in bitdefender very very secure and light weight -
McAfee has turned into an absolute PIG. I will never forget the day McAfee security center "auto-updated" from McAfee Internet Security 06 to "Total Protection 07" on my parent's XPS 400. It was literally like night and day performance wise, and all I heard the next day from my family was "Why's it slow?!" While McAfee was fairly light before, it turned that thing into a dog, with features that were thrown in just because. I ended up doing a clean XP install just to make sure all of it was gone. Installed AVG on that sucker (haven't gotten the chance to switch it to Avira like the other machines in the house) and have had no problems since.
The latest version's PCMag review indicates that the latest version is no better. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2332734,00.asp
Kind of interesting to see Norton and McAfee "trade places" if you will in terms of performance impact, with Norton undergoing a complete overhaul and relegating non core features to Add-On packs available online, while McAfee tries to add everything but the kitchen sink...
If you don't mind installing separate programs for anti-virus, anti-spyware and such, go with Avira and Comodo Firewall. If you would rather have a suite, try Norton 09. -

I had comodo firewalll and i think it suck some times it woould not allow me on the internet some no programs just wouldn't work. So i'm using windows firewall. i dont ee any other firewall for x64 vista. zone alarm was pretty good for x86. and vista firewall control was just stupiid.

Also turn off or get rid of redundant programs such as windows firewall, defender, etc. -
I kow I once had a look at free firewalls and one of them had spyware included...
Free software can (stress can!!! be dodgy...)
I use Kaspersky.
But McAffee is generally slow, so is Norton (some people claim the newest is fast though...)
McAfree slow
