right before i had to send my laptop back to get OS moved to new HD i noticed that after the screen where you can get into the BIOS i found some strange text, it chnaged to quickly to see it all but i did see the words "Media Fail" i was a bit worried but vista loaded fine and i was able to login and eveything seemed fine, any idea what this Media Fail is all about?

That's a possibility, because then the BIOS would have tried to find the appropriate formatting data on the hdd, and (obviously) would have failed, and as a result would probably have treated it as unreadable (i.e., failed) hardware/media.
