I have a couple of questions regarding Memory/RAM and large files:
1 If I am opening a heavily laden Powerpoint presentation with a multitude of JPEGs and a file size in the range of 60 MBs, how much memory load is being used?
2 The same question above but for a 260 MB PDF file with lots of images.
3 Is virtual memory eaten up by the number of icons on the desktop ?
4 Is virtual memory eaten up if I keep folders with files amounting to > 2GB of HD space?

1. i could be wrong, but i believe it will be 60 MB more than whatever it was when you opened it; for example, if your system was using 300 megs of ram before opening the .ppt, it would be ~360 megs of ram used when open.
2. same as 1.
3/4. do you mean the pagefile? -
Pagefile? Yes.

the pagefile is only accessed as needed since it's slower.
3. technically the answer is "possibly", but it's a very low possibility; like low enough that you shouldn't worry about it.
4. depends on how much ram you have and how much is being used.
i think you may be confusing what virtual memory is and how it works. you might want to google/wiki it. -
HI..
Go to http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html and download process explorer. (They also have a whole pile of other really great utilities, look around the site). Nothing to install just run the executable. You can add and adjust the columns to give you huge amounts of information at a glance (I use it to replace my system Task Manager:Under Options, check 'Replace Task Manager')
Want to see how much memory and processor time a particular file or application is using? just double click that process in the list. Here is the process properties window for a power point presentation of my own.Attached Files:

That file was helpful. I am glad I have 512 MBs.
My new system will have 1 GB. That should be more than enough for what I do.
