I had no problems with Windows Update on my Windows 7 or families Windows 7 laptops or Desktop.

You're probably one of the lucky ones. It started 15 mins later after i made my post so over a hour until it started downloading updates. It never took that long before, also it did the same with my old Windows 7 laptop and it took a bit longer

I was able to do Windows Update fine on Monday night, hide the optional and driver updates - I already had a newer driver from the OEM, and it went quickly.

Today I tried, and I keep getting the connectivity error 80072efd when I ran windows update. The update server is unreachable.

I haven't done any systems changes since Monday nights Windows Update run, I had updated Nvidia driver earlier.

It may simply be a connectivity issue in between me and the Microsoft update server, or MS is reconfiguring to accomodate the load from serving all those Windows 10 updates pushed in the last 24 hours.

    Update later :)

Update: 2/5 (next morning): Windows Update didn't work yesterday - couldn't connect to the MS Windows Update server, but just now the next day morning it worked.

Connected and checked quickly, and found one Optional update, which I hid to check if I need it later.

Chiming in here: I have a total 3 Windows 7 installs, two Windows 8.1 installs and two Windows 10 installs. Out of all of those, there is one computer that is slow to update and I am guessing it is due to either the fact that it on a slow HDD or something else in settings that WU doesn't exactly like. All other machines, that is two Windows 7 installs, one Home Premium, one Pro and two Windows 8.1 Pro installs are updating as intended and very quickly for that matter. Heck, my Windows 10 laptops update slower half the time, so it's definitely not MS crippling WU on earlier versions of Windows.
