No need to panic, it means nothing!

At least there will still be security updates, which is what really mattersw anyway imo.
Once that ends though, unless Windows 11 or 12 (or whatever) turns out to be crud, I guess I'll have to say goodbye to Windows.Ferris23 likes this. -

and at least we won't have updates that break Windows anymore! just security updates! all I need!

When Microsoft stops providing updates and fixes for an OS, it should become abandon-ware and they should not be allowed to sell it any more, in my humble opinion if i was president.

RIP Windows 7. But I believe Windows 8.1 is a solid OS now, except a few aesthetic choices.

It's NOT RIP! It will easily outlive Windows 8.1 big time, it's just that new features won't be added (not like they've been adding anything anyway) and no more free support if you call Microsoft about Windows 7 (I'd never call Microsoft for help even if you paid me with the clowns they have behind those phones)
What stops me from using it is this:
Do you get an error upon every restart in 8.1?
Still can't figure that one out. After formatting, setting up everything perfectly, restart and bam, brief error, happens randomly but too much for my OCD, damages my brain cells
It only happens on MY Alienware 18, the 3 other DELL laptops I own don't have it! I'm betting it's something to do with the drivers I install since the software and the AV installed are identical. They are all the latest drivers from DELL
Second thing is, My Benchmarks are 10 to 15% lower in Windows 8.1 -
they're still patching it till 2020 so it isn't dead - it's only free support is being discontinued, this means you need to pay for help from now till 2020 when windows 7 actually laid to rest.Ferris23 likes this.

I understand that. It's like a form of life support. A little like the AW18 but that's a discussion for another thread.....
-
so long as there's compatible windows 10 drivers for the 2013 AW17 and AW18 then i'm moving to win 10 easy.Ferris23 likes this.

I can already game on W10 with a P650 so I'm hoping that drivers will be compatible.

Seriously, do people actually call Microsoft for support? Do they then call up the IRS for help with their unpaid taxes? Do they saunter on down to the police station for their illegal drugs? Outside of extreme masochism, why on earth would anyone with even a modicum of sense do such a thing?

same here, I want a new OS with better support for new hardware but I want it to translate into better performance as well unlike Windows 8.1 which has better support for newer hardware but acts like crap with USB 3.0 external HDDs and has lower performance in every benchmark you can list with the exception of Fire Strike -
Well remind me to watch my use of RIP in this forum. I understand that it won't technically be RIP until 2020, just like XP was technically not RIP until last year. Hence my subsequent use of life support since no new features will be added. But excuse my use of "RIP".

M$ has until 2020 to get it together as far as I'm concerned.
This is so funny! Self-indulgent much? -
Same here.

Individuals, especially the sort that browse sites like NBR, probably don't. Though I'm sure plenty of companies have service contracts of some flavor with MS for Windows support.killkenny1 likes this.

LOL!
Tech: is your computer plugged in? Windows won't run on a computer that is not plugged in. Seriously, they asked these questions twenty years ago. It infuriated a lot of people, especially those who paid for support. -
Yes, that's where I'm at right now. Windows 10 doesn't look much better than 8.x, so I may very well pass that one, too.
BS
Windows 8.x is pretty much unusable, for me, and it is an OS that will be long forgotten by the time Windows 7 is still going strong.
Have you ever actually tried calling them? It's been a very long time, but on the few occasions I had called Microsoft tech support back in the day, I have found them quite helpful. It's perfectly possible that this has changed by now. Nevertheless, I do wonder whether there are in fact any actual experiences behind the kind of attitude expressed in the above quote.Ferris23 likes this. -
They were still rather helpful back in 2012 and sometimes you have questions about things like licensing, etc. that can only be truly answered by someone from MS.
