I have a laptop that came with MS Office 2003 Sm Bus Ed installed. I have the disk as well for it. I want to buy a new Laptop from Dell. Is there any reason to buy Office again for this new laptop or can I install it on the new one from the old CD. My question is really about can I STILL leave it on my old laptop running and install it ADDITIONALLY on the new laptop.
thanks

I believe that you can. My mom called Microsoft and asked them if that was an option, and then told her it was. But you can call them and ask yourself
I just stay away from that MS Office crap where I can. www.openoffice.org FTW!

some licenses for office are for 3 computers. i do not know if your version is. look at the documentation that came with it.
calling MSO crap is a little naive. it's quite possibly the best suite/platform there is at the moment. -

well I wondered if it goes online and talks to MS and says (hey heres another install of disk number XXXXX and then it wont operate or something.)
I just want to keep the old one running for a bit after getting the new laptop and not have to buy the same program again since theres no new version yet -
I think you need to buy a new one. -
but I only need for the old laptop and the new laptop. So why should I need a new one if it says I can have 2 activations?
I appreciate you looking this up BTW -
As I understand it (from the link) that the editions that come preinstalled are different than the ones you buy normally in a store (OEM vs. retail), and therefore don't allow you to activate 2 installations at one time, and moreover Microsoft doesn't allow you to transfer the license onto another system that you own, which you usually can do with a regular retail edition.

Here is another link about OEM software that I found @ Microsoft: (I think it is more clearly stated here)

Hope this helps -
just found this as you posted this. from the website
(which is really ahhh, (keeping it clean), a huge bummer)
You can install one copy of Office Professional Edition 2003, Office Small Business Edition 2003, and Office Standard Edition 2003 on your main computer and another on your laptop computer for your exclusive, but non-concurrent use. To install a version of these Office 2003 Editions on more than these two computers, you must obtain another license for the program. You can install Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 on up to three computers in your household if a household member is qualified. You can work with Office 2003 Editions at your desk and when mobile. Note Licenses for the 2003 release of Office acquired preinstalled on new computers are single-computer licenses that cannot be transferred or installed on another computer -
thank you all for the info!!!!

as you
). But I wish they had given me a student license ahhhhh. When I get my new laptop I am going to have to check if they can provide me with a new license.

That, and people use Excel like it's a freakin' database. Which it isn't.
