I heard a rumor that you could buy a copy of Microsoft Office - including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and more - and then download to more than one computer. Is this possible? Doesn't Microsoft have some kind of serial code or other protection to prevent one person from spreading Office for free?

Yes MS does have license assigned to each software, but the Student/Teacher edition can be installed on 3 PC's before you have to buy another license. This is legal. The extra installs are a feature of this edition.
I'm not sure about the standard or business edition.

The Standard and Pro editions I believe are for one PC only. If you run the same one on multiple machines you are violating the license agreements and Microsoft can track and disable the product key. You can however download a 60 day trial of Office 2003, after which you will be required to purchase a license key. This can be installed on any number of machines but only as the trial.
