I just bought my computer for college, but I didn't purchase Office with the notebook because I have found several places that will give a nice academic discount. My options are: Microsoft Office for $70 or Microsoft Office Student and Teacher for $120. From the research I've done, they both run on the same four basic programs. Which is better?
    Thanks a ton!

I use the student edition, but I got it because it was cheaper than the original. You might want to check and make sure they are both 2003 editions. If they are, then go with the cheaper of the two. If not, then buy Student 2003 edition. Most of my professors and computer classes require the latest version.

I never could tell a difference between the original and the student edition except for the price.

Could try OpenOffice. I got rid of Office and use it. It is free and works well although I must admit I only do the ocassional letter or spreadsheet. Allows you to open/save .doc, .xls, .ppt, etc. Good Luck.

Doesn't your university provide such programs for its students?
My university provides every student with a copy of office 2003 pro for Mac or PC. + we get access to the corporate win XP license that they have, in addition to other software.

So check with your university's tech support before going ahead and buying anything that you might need.

    Hi,

I just wanted to say that I use the free download for www.openoffice.org .It's as good or better than the Microsoft works suite and is compatible with it. Now below you can click on the link to but the openoffice CD with 3 other CD's all for only $4.95 shipping. I did that also! It was cheap and I had the CD's in the originl boxes. Either way you can't go wrong. This product is excellent and has more than enough . The www.openoffice.org is so good that I don't know why people bother with the microsoft work suite if they knew how good this is. Don't forget that it is compatible with Microsoft Word.

    Take a look,

i've been a user and tester for the openoffice.org product. functionality to cost (free download) ratio benefit is readily apparent once you start using the Sun product. Personally, it's not quite seamless as the ms product but it provides capabilities that's more than adequate for most users. keep in mind though, the sun product is open source and it will match and surpass ms product very soon if not already with its 2.0 beta product.
