I was wondering if anyone can answer this question (forgive me if it is a stupid one)....I am planning to purchase a Sony laptop. The pre-configured model doesn't come with Microsoft office installed. I think you get a trial version and also Microsoft Works.

I have bought a Dell desktop which has Microsoft Office 2003 basic edition (I included it on the time of the purchase). I know I have some recovery CDs at home for it...

The question is - do I have to purchase Office again for the laptop or is there any way I can use the software from my desktop?

    I'd appreciate any comments.

    Hi Chad,
Your best bet is to check the EULA or "end user license agreement" on the version of office you own. I'm pretty sure that the pro version allows you to have an install on your desktop and another on a mobile device like a notebook. I'm not sure with the basic version though, it could very well be different. In any case office needs to be activated, so it won't let you run two copies on different machines unless it is allowed. Also, unless your recovery CDs have a seperate install disk or program for office, you may be out of luck as most recovery disks will only work on the same make and model of computer they came with.

    Hi Jack,

Thanks for your reply. I'm going to check if I have an installation CD besides the recovery one - maybe with some luck...

I just think it is a waste having to pay for 2 licenses for the same user.

    Anyhow, I appreciate your input.
