I exported a large (3,000 tasks) mpp to xml and when I attempt to open it with Project I get the error "An unexpected error occurred. The file may be damaged." I tried exporting it several times but get the same error each time. I don't see anything obvious in the xml, but it is huge and something could be lurking someplace that's not apparent.
    Does anybody have any ideas?

I would try to do it again in increments. Maybe 500 records to start and if that works then 500 more and so on. If there is a glitch in any of those then you at least can narrow it down to the last 500 records.

That would be my approach too. And/or do 1st half, second half and if one has errors, do first half second half on that set (so 1st/2nd quarters or 3rd/4th quarters), and so on.

Ensure your using the latest version of MS Project 2010

Ensure you are using the latest version of MS Project 2010 (at least 14.0.6112.5000) – MS Project 2010 > File > Help
Republish the project using MS Project 2010

There are several open source programs to check if a XML file is valid. If the XML file is found to be invalid, you know there is a bug in the export process.
