Wow, this should be good!! Well needed
-
Indeed, I had a root kit on my system lately, no idea how it got there but there must be some big holes somewhere...
-
As a general rule, the biggest security holes are usually sitting in front of the computer...
If you had a rootkit on your computer, then it's there because you installed it. -
What Pirx said. a root kit is pretty serious a updated security release isnt going to fix that.
-
Does that mean the clergy are likely to have more malware because they are holier?
-
Yes that is exactly what he meant.
And if you are Swiss cheese or a cheese grater or a sieve or colander you are likely to have alot of malware too.
-
Yes, that's true, you shouldn't let other people do stuff on your pc I realized.

It`s about time Microsoft released an service pack for Win7 , I re-install Win7 a lot and i am sick of having to download all the updates.
Also i think i will turn off the auto updates and wait and see if any systems are bricked or other problems before i do the update myself. -
whoa, 2GB.
-
read the whole release article...
the 2gb download is for an iso that contains the installer for 32, 64, and ia64 os versions.
If all you want is the 32 or 64 bit installer, they are approx 750Mb each. -
^^^ Yea I noticed that as well. I prefer to wait til' Q1 next yr. for the 'official release' via Windows Updates though.
-
Wouldn't it be nice if it just came with the security =p
-
don't install the SP1 RC unless you want to uninstall it later as it is time limited to Nov 2011 and it has to be removed before the official SP1 RTM can be installed.
It doesn't have much new things to offer unless you have a very new 2008 R2 based corporate infrastructure that can take advantage of the new features. -

Well...I hope MS issues some updates to their IE9 beta via this update.
-
Yeah, I know that installing the RC isn't a good idea right now. I was just making the point that the final release shouldn't be too far off.
-
Well, the updates just hit. About 15 (with Office) security updates. A lot seem pretty crucial so get to updating.

The updates have just come in
My system is updating right now.
There are 15 of them
Cheers
PS., My XP desktop had 13 of them, out of which 4 were for MS office 2007.. anyway. Just thought I'll leave a word here
-
Where is this Update ?? is it through the Windows update ?

Yep, I just got the update. No immediate news on whether it was good or bad. But what I do have is a nice false sense of security from this update!
-
I hate that they put "Bing Bar" in critical updates.

this security patch is really slowing down my outlook
-
Threads merged
I installed all the updates, and everything still seems to be the same, like it should be. -
You have got to be kidding. -_- I've been avoiding that forever, and now they want to force it? Microsoft really wants me to switch to Linux, don't they?
Which of the updates is it? I don't see it. -
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
I never get Bing bar in the update, maybe because I'm in Canada?
And yep, upon further research, not windows OS related but the latest update for outlook 2007 is garbage and slows down your outlook. Uninstall/avoid it. -
my computer seems to run a little snappier after the updates.
I am liking this! -
so this update is this the massive security update mentioned by the op?

I use the Bing Bar to get free rewards like Amazon codes...

sp1 beta has run 100% stable here -

if you reinstall your own system a lot, you're doing it wrong
but seriously, how about setting up a win7 setup usb stick, and put the updates in the update folder once a month. that way, your reinstalls are up to date (or maybe each other month, so it doesn't have to get many updates).
one should code a tool for that....
-
what "bing bar"
never seen it before not even in optional update
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
no bingbar here, too
-
No bingbar for me too. I don't know if it has got anything to do with the EU making it harder for MSFT to push thing' through to customer' here or if it (the bingbar) is simply intended for US customer', for the moment... boh, I don't know.
Anyway.. -
Just installed the updates, uneventfully, as expected. No Bing Bar update, of course (I'm in the US). If I had to venture a guess, I'd say the clowns complaining about this "being forced down their throats" had it installed already.
-
That's because it's not there.
-
lol, I think so, too... (and my guess was wrong!)
You may well be right actually... I remember quiet a few prog's that have the Bing bar as an additional install option and I'm sure many user's might have installed it unknowingly.. and I wonder if there was an update for people who already had bing bar installed...
Anyway..
Cheers.
-
No, I had no bing bar installed at all. Maybe if you use IE as your default browser it gives you the update.
edit: I just tried it on a few PC's. It seems if you DON'T have Bing bar installed it puts it on the "recommended" list, but under "important", so all you that it doesn't show up better check your add-ons, because most likely your Bing Bar or MSN Toolbar is already installed!
So exact opposite of what you clowns are claiming.
FWIW it does show up unselected. -

I just got notified of about 44MB of mostly security updates. Downloading and installing now.
-
I have checked and no, it didn't install for me (and I have Windows Update set to all, including notifications for the optional and less important one's).
-
Well for some reason it showed up on mine. I have one more machine I haven't updated, I'll check that one.
-
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
Oh, I also wasn't given an automatic Bing Bar install...
-
I just saw this:
An update for Bing Bar version 6.3 is available
I don't know if this update (the article was "last reviewed" [whatever that means] on December 6) is this now-famous "Bing Bar update", and it was slipped silently into the patch tuesday updates?!!!
Still I don't know why it showed up only for some and not for all!!!
Anyway, cheers. -
Yeah. It was probably stuck in an earlier update without me noticing. :/ And yes, it is being forced on us. How the hell is an ad for their mediocre search engine a critical update? They're abusing their position in the OS market with this crap.
-
Sounds like you're stuck in the last century with this nonsense. The times when Microsoft could be "abusing their position in the OS market" are long, long gone. Once you get out of your time loop, you may notice that at this point they are, in fact, fighting, not to say struggling, to stay relevant in the market. If you want to start whining about companies "abusing their position in the market" (a concept that makes little sense in the first place, but that's a different matter entirely), you might want to look at some other companies that are constantly in the news these days...

Microsoft makes money from large corporations because THAT is where all the big money is.

Microsoft makes money from the scam that is Microsoft office in the enterprise, the os money is just a bonus
