Another fail from Microshaft's worst OS in history!
I think Windows 8 has failed so bad that now they don't know how to improve it anymore so they just keep trying so hard and breaking a few things here and there...
======================================================================================
Microsoft has released the 'August Update' for Windows 8.1 which will be part of a new monthly release cycle that will bring minor enhancements to the OS.The new Windows 8.1 update is part of the companys regular Patch Tuesday rollout, and its currently available as a manual download to both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 8.1.
Microsoft has now taken down the download links because is has acknowledged a few issues, such as inaccurate rendering of fonts, inability to recognize fonts residing in a location other than the default fonts directory, as well as a system crash that is leaving users with a 0x50 Stop error message.
For improper rendering of fonts, the company is now asking users to uninstall several update files.
So just Find and uninstall any of the following update that are currently installed:
[*] KB2982791
[*] KB2970228
[*] KB2975719
[*] KB2975331

oh darn! nice observation man!
-
My fonts render just fine on Windows 7.
I don't care what happens on Windows 8.x. -

ROFL!
class! -
To be specific about the versions of Windows affected:
KB 2975331 affects Windows 8.0 and Server 2012 (only)
KB 2975719 affects Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 (only)
KB 2970228 affects all versions of Windows 8.x and 2012, plus Windows 7 and 2008 R2 (but not anything earlier, including 2008 R1)
KB 2982791 affects all currently supported versions of Windows - 8.x, 2012 (incl. R2), 7, 2008 (incl. R2), Vista, and Server 2003.Ferris23 likes this. -
After some googling I'll offer the following comments:
- The problem is real, and can have serious consequences to the point of being unable to boot the OS. However, not all systems are affected by the issue. There's not enough information to say what makes a system vulnerable to this.
- Given that there are no reports of problems in this forum, and even Google shows only a small number of hits, it seems that only a small number of systems are affected. There is some indication that, for the systems affected, the problems appear after the second reboot. If you have rebooted your computer more than twice since the update, there's a good chance you won't have issues.
- Personally I conclude that at this point I'll just leave things alone, and wait for a fix from Microsoft. I think it is extremely unlikely that I'll ever experience a problem with the update.Ferris23 likes this. -

after I did the update, before knowing about this issue. I noticed that for 3 or 4 times every reboot it says "performing operations 5%" and the number would take like 3 mins till the reboot happens, if one had an HDD it would take much longer
Im gonna format now and reinstall Windows 7 FTW and ensure not to install those updates -
No issues here whatsoever running 8.1 with all updates applied including the 5 updates in question. Boots fine every time, no 5% operation messages while booting. It's a Steam Box I built with an Nvidia GTX 770 and an i7 3770K CPU. I'll wait for the MS fix which may happen prior to next months Tues Updates.

The wife's computer has Vista and she is having problems on booting. It hangs and will not complete the boot. After force shutting it down and rebooting it works OK on 2nd try. Could that be one off those updates? My Win 7 (on my computer) seems to be OK so far.

Odd my W7x64 OS SP1 works fine with the latest Aug updates....I think there is more to this then others are telling us that is affecting their system. Otherwise we hear more on here about W7 problems.
Same here nothing wrong with Fonts or anything funny with the O/S. Maybe those having the problem could be more technical and tells us where and what they did to notice the problem. That would be more beneficial then saying oh font problems....you sure those fonts are from Windows and not other software fonts???? Windows isn't the only program that use fonts.... -
Same here both win8 and 7 updated with no issues on usage

Awww CRAP!
I just did a clean install on someone's Asus and made sure to run Windows update to get all updates. I sure hope I didn't install any of the affected updates. -
As others have noted, the principal problem, KB 2982791, is not Win8-specific. You gotta check all your machines regardless of what version of Windows they're running.
My Duo 11 had that update but hadn't experienced any problems yet; I uninstalled it without issue. -
I wouldn't worry too much. Chances are overwhelmingly in favor of you not having any problems.tijo likes this.

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Have a fully updated Windows 8. Seems to work fine *knocks on <del>head</del> wood*
Will consider this info when I'm gonna be updating Windows 7 on my other machine. -
Yup, so far, every updates that had to be pulled didn't cause me problems in any way *knocks on wood*. Oh and I mean not just this instance, every time MS pulled updates. It seems to me that whatever the problem is it is sort of an "edge case", it's just that given the number of Windows user, the total of people affected might still be significant.
-
Installed the affected updates on all the W8.1 (2 desktops, 1 laptop) and W7 (2 desktops, 2 laptops) machines in the household before they were pulled, but no issues so far.
I think that's just it. MS has quite the difficult job when it comes to these updates; there's so many people using Windows for such a huge range of purposes (intended and otherwise) that it's remarkable that most updates don't end up breaking something. -
Yep; the same thing happens with Android updates, where once again, you have a large variety of hardware and OEM-specific software. Take the numerous issues the Galaxy S3 had with the update from Android 4.3 to 4.4.2. Hell, my carrier recalled the update for the Galaxy S3 and has kept the phone at 4.3 ever since. These sorts of issues are inevitable when you have a wide variety of hardware and software that your OS needs to work with (as both Microsoft and Google do).

I think that is a understatement for what it is worth. -
Hopefully, it is not pulled because some malware got broken like last time it made it this big in the news.
Microsoft has taken down the August Update because of some issues
