Every time I minimize and maximize a window the Aero effect is not as smooth as it should be. But if I just repeatedly minimize and maximize a window the effect will start to speed up and it becomes smooth. I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium. Solution?
My Dell Inspiron 1420 is more than powerful enough to handle Vista...Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHZ, 2.0 GB Ram, Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS.

What's running in the background? Doing any behind-the-scenes virus scans?

That's just exactly the same issue i've been suffering from, and i described it here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=189949
Lets hope someone can help us and find a solution, i feel almost regret in not having ordered an integrated card cuz those seem to work far better in vista graphic interface -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Tried updating your drivers yet? Specifically with ForceWare drivers? Stock Dell drivers have been known to be buggy here and there.
-
Yep, using latest forceware WHQL drivers for the 8400GS...
THis thing is really starting to piss me off. I am hesitant of ringing dell and asking for a video card replacement or something when i see other people suffering from the same problem, makes me think it has to be a driver related problem or something.
Help guys!! Please try this vista effect and post your results, specially if you're using an NVIDIA dedicated video card. -

why would you ask for a video card replacement, it has nothing to do with that.

Exactly what's happening is that powermizer is lowering the clock speeds to save battery life or just reduce heat/power consumption when unnecessary but that decrease is too much such that they can't keep up with the requirement to perform the aero interface. Thus it will lag when you first start to maximize/minimize but when it realizes you are doing this it will kick the clocks back up and thus remove the lag. So blame powermizer for your troubles and get an ATI
. That or you would have to OC your "min" clocks to be just high enough to run aero without lag or you could download Vista Battery Saver and just screw the aero transparency/other things on battery.

I had the same problem as most have described here. I agree that it is frustrating - gives you the feeling that your computer is not fast enough to handle even the silly Vista effects. I tried different drivers, overclocked for a while, reinstalled the OS a few times, but the choppiness never went away. I let it go thinking good drivers just haven't been written for the 135M just yet. Switching to the Basic theme felt much, much snappier.
For a totally different reason I switched to x64. I was surprised to find out that the vista effects became very smooth, and that any lag associated with Aero were 100% gone. As a side bonus, the "skipping" that I had when listening to audio was also gone. Even under heavy use, the "fix" was finally a permanent one.
For me, it was the combination of x64, Dell's 101.19 driver (tried other newer ones, too) for the 135M, and of course my specific hardware set as detailed in my signature that made it work - your mileage will vary. Don't discount Dell's driver right from the gate, either. While it produced the lesser numbers on the WEI (a good point and a half against my other configurations), it was the one that worked the absolute best.
Good luck in your hunt. Just know that there is hope, and I am inclined to think that it is absolutely a software (driver) issue, rather than a hardware one.

Oe thing that might work is to try to disbale some of the eye candy and still leave the max/min sizing checked It works for me
To do is go to My Computer>System Properties>System Protection>Advance Tab>Under Performace click Settings> Now check and uncheck needed and not needed but dont uncheck the Max/Min sizing -
click on the battery in the taskbar and set the power plan to high performance. this might work?

The problem as stated above is in the powermizer of nvidia graphics cards that lowers the clock speeds below the necessary clocks to run vista aero. As far as I know there is no solution besides finding drivers that dont have powermizer enabled (lots dont on laptopvideo2go.com) or as someone else stated use rivatuner to up the clock speeds on 2d low power setting to the maximum (even this didn't completely get rid of it for me). For now I'm just accepting it.

I have the same problem exactly, and it's getting really annoying.
I just turned off the "minimize/maximize" effects in the performance settings to get rid of it, but it feels like a cheap solution.
