This thread is for new software updates, any minor software updates post in this thread.

    ===============
    MOD EDIT
    ===============

Please use this thread for small incremental browser update discussion. For major releases, creating a separate thread is acceptable (and a good idea).

    Thanks,

This thread is going to have to be renewed afresh every few weeks as it becomes unmanageably long.

    Opera, MSIE, FF/Mozilla, Chrome, Maxxon.

And you just know someone is going to start discussing FF plugins as well.........

A nicer solution might be to borrow from the HP forum (latest drivers) and set up a grid that ONE person has write access to.

That would be a lot more organized, but that person would have to be up to date on all browsers and releases.
I think it's fine to have a thread for every update/release. That way, the person who finds the quickest update can post it.
It is definitely going to get to messy in here. Imagine when 2 or 3 browsers release at the same time, people going to be talking about one or the other, quoting way too much, etc.
My vote: close this thread, and keep it the way it has been.

Or split it for popular Internet browsers, aka have one for Firefox, one for IE, one for Chrome, etc. That shouldn't be too complicated, no?

I guess...but the thread will always have new posts because of comments, and what if people just want to be notified of new releases of their favorite browser. It is much easier to read a new thread title claiming the new version is available.

Internet Explorer doesn't get enough releases - so it doesn't need its own individual thread.

I think it's best if someone with too much time maintains one thread with all info.

    That wont be me...

I agree with McGrady on this one. The trees of browser updates will be lost in the forest of comments/update news about browsers that any particular user is indifferent to, and if this thread grows large, many users won't bother to keep up with it. I know I wouldn't check it every time there was a new post, and probably wouldn't find out about things as quickly as with new threads for each release.

Whereas with a thread per release, it's easy enough for users to see that Firefox or w/e has a new version, view the thread if they are interested (here, I'd see all the Firefox comments even if I don't care about Firefox), and if they aren't, it'll fall off the first page in a few days unless it really is a major release.

One thread with updates in the first post would be in-between - less digging for update news through the comments, but not as quick as either other option.

Even at one page, this thread is becoming too widely spread for me - I don't care about Chrome version 4.0.whatever (or even Chrome 4 vs 3 vs 2 vs 1, for that matter), and don't care about every old Firefox Release Candidate version.

Did they at last increase that horribly slow startup speed or is it still that slow at starting up?

(Yes, 4 seconds, or 2 or 3 on a SSD is slow)

Flash doesn'r crash in FF... so blame it on Chrome :)

And in IE the problems I had was that the process wouldn't close.

Just get it from Filehippo instead.

I doubt that we will ever see a "final" version with Opera and Chrome. They change the way they name the builds a while back and seem to be content with the "beta" at the end ;)

    cheers ...

So which is the fastest official browser right now and isn't a resource hog?

I'm right now torn between Opera, Firefox, and Chrome. I've tried all and each has positives and negatives. Firefox lately has been feeling slow to me. However I tried Opera after hearing about how much faster the 10.5 beta supposedly is. However there seem to be a lot of bugs with it and it slowed my computer down big time.

Chrome is definitely very fast from my little experience with it but at the same time there are some things it (and Opera) don't do that Firefox does....

What specifically is it that FF does that Chrome doesn't for you? Chrome has add-ons now, just click the wrench, 'extensions', browse all (at the bottom). I have found almost every FF add-on I ever liked ported to Chrome. Check it out, you might be surprised. :)

Ugly as I don't know what and horrible as I don't know what...

And search - I WANT that search box on the top right as it is available right now.

Why are they dumbing down browsers? Is it because schools don't teach reading any more?

omg something new, and it's just an idea, and i can't look at the good points of the idea because it means change, and change is baaddd..

    you get the idea :)

i like his effort. not 100% in agreement with him, but quite nice.

i prefer a more backstage like setup than a home tab anyways. then again, the home tab would still fit for each new tab. and for people with old habits (det? :)), you could just chose about:blank as the new tab default page instead.

I could choose about blank, yes, but where is my search box?

Change - change is good if it ads - search in Vista over XP, it didn't take anything away - and here you loose the organization of old... but then Google uses large icons for people who can't read - Opera and Firefox do the same... as does Windows 7.
Also, text means I don't have to remember what an icon stands for.
(And by the way - I use the "Favorites/Bookmark Bar" or however that's called in Firefox in English - when I click I actually select the test, not the icon - its that text that registers)

it's a MOCKUP to show the new tab. it's not ment to be that way. he left search out as he didn't need it for the mockup.

he shows IDEAS, not a final perfect solution for everything. it's a sketch.

oh, and for most people, icons are easier to remember than texts. this is proven. and icons are language independent.

Maybe that's why in IE8 you can haver both (for the controls) and FF3 as far as I am aware too.

But this nonsense relies on icons...
