Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum. It's helped me out a lot so far, but i have a question that i was unable to find in the search. I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722 and want to up the hard drive to a faster 7200 RPM because the 4200 RPM just isn't cutting it. This is my first laptop, so my question is, can i take out the hard drive, put it in a desktop system and clone it with mirror imaging software to the new 7200 drive? Are the laptop SATA connections the same as a desktops? Any advice or info would be appreciated. Thanks fellas,
GriFF

welcome to the forums.
Yes, they are, I have done that multiple times and it works just fine. -

I recently upgraded to a Hitachi Travelstar. Here's a 60 GB from NewEgg

Do you guys think it would be easier to just load the OS on the new drive and find the drivers? I went to Toshiba's site and couldn't find all the drivers there? They only had a couple, like sound and bios. Is there anywhere else i could go to get laptop drivers for my Toshiba?

it all depends on if you're happy with the way your OS is setup now. If you want to do a fresh load, you can do so. Definitely, you should ensure you have drivers for your hardware before doing so.
Weird how there is no video driver listed.
I'd go to device manager, make a list of what hardware you have now, and see if you can find it on manufacturer's sites.
how big of a drive do you want/need? I have an 80GB Hitachi 7k200 drive that I don't have a need for that I could get rid of if you wanted. -
All of the drivers are available on Toshiba's site. You need to search for your model number and it gives you a page with all of them. Try this link:

If you have Vista Ultimate, you can use Complete PC Backup to make an image of the system and restore that to the new drive. Another option, which I have not used, is to use DriveImageXML, which I hear is a good tool, and it's also free.
As for the SATA drive, many laptops have a small adapter you'll need to connect the drive. You can probably take it off your old drive and connect it to the new drive, but sometimes it's not obvious and it just looks like they have different connectors.
Mirror drive and replace?
