I've recently noticed that the device manager failed to show up my western digital 320gb hard disk under disk drive also computer management failed to show up the hard disk & drives & partitioning info. it just shows only DVD writer but everything is working fine as my computer shows the drives C & D.

is my hard disk corrupt? or something problem in the partitioning table?
do i need to repartition the disk? Pl help :(

Shut down computer, unplug power cord, remove HDD, inspect the connection, re-attach and try again?

EDIT: On second thought, kinda confused here. The WD is an external HDD or Internal? What's the Boot drive? USB 8GB flash drive?

Apparently so, but the computer is still reading from it fine to boot up and operate normally.

I'm not sure about this. Does it show up in My Computer? Checked out Event Viewer? Tried doing a Windows Update?

....But yea, you might wanna do a backup of the drive while it's operating atm. Windows 7 has a built in Backup tool which can be found under Control Panel.

EDIT: BTW, try to think on what you were doing lately that might have triggered the issue; just before you noticed this.

    System Restore?

Also a Repair Install might solve this issue. You will need a copy of Windows 7. When i've had minor issues with 7 I did that and it fixed them.

EDIT 2: And uh, doing a little search revealed that this might be virus related. I would suggest using Avira Free anti virus, along with MalwareBytes.

missing/bad driver or .inf info for the hard drive. make sure that your chipset and disk controller drivers are up to date. chipset first.

yes the computer is still reading & booting up & operating normally.

i did update the chipset drivers, Intel matrix storage manager.

i have scanned my system with Microsoft security essentials too & Avira . no virus were found.

i have been trying to format my micro SD card to FAT file system. but i haven't not done anything that messes with my hard disk. when i connected my micro SD to my lappy device manager showed up my SD card, but i dint notice my hard disk.

i recently upgraded to windows 7 from vista. when i went to do fresh installation of win7, win7 DVD boot up fine while copying files to hard disk during install it showed up error saying unable to copy files to hard disk, make sure the disk is in drive, then i installed vista again then i did upgraded to win7 by copying the win7 files from DVD to hard disk.

im unable to do repair, whenever im trying to repair my win7 as mentioned by makaveli72 it says drive c doesn't have much free space to do repair/upgrade. but drive c still have 25gb of free space.

    drive C: 40gb
    free space on c: 25gb

is it the problem with partition table or hard disk driver? is it a sign of failure?

yea i have done that this morning, still it doesn't work.

how can i clean install windows 7 on drive C, coz whenever i try to do clean install everything works fine till formatting the drive C, once i format the drive n click on continue, it halts in the process of copying files when it reads 0% then it shows error message media missing, windows setup couldn't complete, restart.

but i can install windows vista on the same drive if im booting with vista DVD, format n clean install vista, vista works just fine, but format n clean install is not possible if im using windows 7 DVD.

im confused with this, is it a problem with windows7 DVD media or hard disk?
i have burned windows 7 DVD on to new disc it shows the same error message.

i have backed up all my data to drive D, all i left with is drive C. any other way to format n clean install windows 7.

Is the hard drive set to AHCI or SATA in the BIOS? (just not anything like compatibility mode)
