Yesterday I uninstalled XP and combined that partition with the Vista one using Gparted live cd. But now, when I turn on my Dell Inspiron 9100, Vista won't load. it says it is missing the ntldr. I have searched all over for answers, but all the ones i have found are for all versions of windows except Vista.

I cannot get the Vists cd to load to try and repair it. It is Vista home Premium OEM. I put in the cd and it says "press any button to load the cd". I do, and the loading begins. Then, after it loads, there is a black screen with the cursor showing.

I tried to repartition the Vista partition with Gparted Live cd, but I couldn't. It said I should shut down the computer normally, but I can't. Since the Vista login screen doesn't show up, and there is no way to shut down from the BIOS, i can't.

    Please help :(

Uninstalled XP as in formatted the XP partition?

Anyway, a format and re-install of Vista on your machine would probably solve your problem, but you probably don't want to do that.

You could install XP on your machine (will have to partition your HD again, otherwise it would reformat) and restore NTLDR and boot configs via XP.

How can I format my computer if the operating system won't load? I tried to reformat it with Gparted Live cd, but it said I had to shut down the computer normally to do that, but I can't.

Right now I am on my Mom's work computer that is running XP. Can I some how copy the NTLDR files to a cd and put it in my computer and get Vista to run?

Which was the first partition ?
The one having Vista or the one having XP.
If it's the one having Vista, it's quite natural to happen.
You can try using this :
    http://www.ambience.sk/fdisk-master-boot-record-windows-linux-lilo-fixmbr.php
It might help and it might not.
If it didn't help I think the only way will be to download and burn a live linux distro.Backup all your files and then Reinstall the Windows.

You can enter the repair setting I don't believe you have to reinstall whole thing.

I put in the cd, I have it load from the cd, and it says "Windows is loading files." Then it shows the loading screen. After that is a blank screen with the cursor. No repair settings ever come up. I have the OEm version of Home Premium.

For my ASUS there a small hole for instant shutdown. If you insert a needle in it the laptop will turn off instantly.Rather than that, I don't think there are any safe ways of doing this.

Vista doesn't use NTLDR. That's the boot loader for XP and 2k.
And no, you can't just copy it over. The boot loader has to be located on specific sectors of the harddrive for the bios to be able to locate it (Since the boot loader is loaded before the filesystem and everything else)

So, from what you're saying, his computer isn't trying to boot Vista? So, instead of using the Vista DVD, he should be trying the XP disc instead?

If his BIOS is unable to locate the correct boot loaders in the correct sectors, then he must have somehow corrupted the sectors during the partition merge and damaged his HD?

You don't have two partitions do you?

Gparted couldn't have screwed with your system somehow could it?

I had this problem when I switched a hard drive to main while dual booting vista and xp.

    I fixed it by reformating.

Another option may be to go into bios and see if both partitions (If gparted accidentally made two partitions) are selectable in bios.

If they are, make the other partition the loading partition.

Trust me, will do the trick.

What I am doing now is reinstalling xp on a partition I managed to make in Gparted. Once I get Xp running, what do I need to copy onto the vista partition so it can boot?

Loaded Xp. Still said "NTLDR is missing," when I tried to load from internal hard drive When I went into Gparted, I saw the Vista partition still has my programs and stuff on it, I just can't boot Vista, or XP now.

Tried installing XP again. This time Xp install is working.

I got XP installed. But now when I boot the computer, it boots right into XP. How can I change it so it shows the dual boot menu?

How can I delete XP from inside Vista?

you could use a partition loading program that would load the other partition (vista)

Now Vista is working, except it looks like this:

Where do I find the files so Vista can run correctly? When I try to open programs, some load, some don't. It's weird.

Next time don't use gpartition :-X.

Don't reformat vista, just do an overright. Put in the cd, and have it right over the files.

If need be, make a new install, and delete the old install.

Both partitions will work after this.
