Is disk wipe the most effective and free solution for USB drives? How effective and reliable are the wiping methods?

Disk wipe from whom?? Just format the USB and that more then most likely will clean it out. Use another O/S to format like Mac and then reformat back to PC format and that will kill any attempts to recover data.

dban or Darik's Boot And Nuke is a pretty solid (and free) choice for secure deletion. It does cover connected USB devices as well. You can also look at BleachBit if you want a nice, free windows centric option.
