When I click on some text to copy, just releasing the left key of the mouse doesn't end the highlighting process. I have to click again to stop it -- but if I don't do it quite right, the highlighting disappears.

I presumed that my mouse pad on my laptop was broken (HP Pavilion) and have just been lazy about sending it in for repair. It came back like that from a previous repair -- the tech person made a mess of it -- he re-formatted it under his name "Test" and partitioned the drive so that the OS back-up took up 80% of the HD and the usable disk for me to be 20% (It is supposed to be the other way around.) Just have been too busy to do anything about it.

I just received a wireless mouse for free from HP after ordering cartridges for my printer. I figured -- well I'll use this and that will solve my mouse problem until I can send it in for repair.

Well, the wireless mouse does the same thing -- straight out of the package.

SO I suspect that the problem with the mouse is software related on the laptop. I've looked everywhere I can figure out to look to see if there is some strange setting somewhere that causes the release not to register but that I have to click again when I finish the highlighting (or drag and dropping, etc.)

Does anyone have a clue what is going on?

Check if there is a setting that looks off...

Go to "Control Panel" - "Hardware and Sound" - then "mouse" - look at all option there.

Also, which touchpad? Synaptics or Alps? - Although that shouldn't matter with an external mouse.

I should have mentioned I am still using XP so the categories are a bit different. However, I went into the hardware one which lists "printers and other hardware" -- previously not thinking that there would be keypad mouse settings in there -- and voilĂ  -- there it was: ClickLock had been turned on.

I've turned Clicklock off and it seems to do the problem.

Thanks so much!!!! --- This saves me from sending in the laptop for a repair that was not needed.

Now all I have to do is completely reformat and re-partition my hard drive to clean up the rest of the mess the tech left my laptop in....

Help!! The same thing happened again. I accidental held the shift key down to long and up came a box that said sticky keys had been turned on and to press cancel if you didn't want it. I pressed cancel -- and the same thing has happened. My screen gets highlighted and no matter where the cursor moves the highlight expands and contracts and I can;t stop it.

The clicklock box was not checked off in Mouse properties. I've looked for everything and nothing is stopping this. And I am on my other laptop ASUS than I was when I first posted the message which was when I was on my HP.

So obviously I turned something on and I can;t find how to turn it off!!

    :( Help please...

I must have done something to fix it-- because now everything is fine. I wish I could figure this out!!!!

I've done it now on two separate computers so obviously it is something I've done.
