I am buying a new laptop and I want to put my copy of office on there. I have it on my current machine but I will no longer use it when I get the new one. How can I transfer office. Would uninstall and reinstall with the same product code on the new one work?

It should work buckeye. You can just install MS office on your new laptop once you get with the office CD. Although, if you have a teacher and student edition, you can only install it on three computers or something, I'm not entirely sure, but if you have any other version, I don't see why it won't work.

If you're having problems installing, you can call MS and they'll reactivate it... If the activation doesn't work, you can only use Office 50 times. Afterwards, you'll be able to use all features except for save, so it'll basically become a file viewer. Unless you never turn off your computer and Office is always open.

Also, it may also just happen to work if the hardware is similar enough, and I've no idea how similar it has to be, according to what I read. I installed a copy of Office that was originally installed on my work machine (Dell desktop, P4) on my laptop (Fujitsu, PM) and it miraculously worked, but then when I tried to install it on a friend's laptop (Dell, CM) it wouldn't work. Maybe it's because it was one computer too many, or maybe because they were "similar enough". Don't ask, don't tell.

Also if the hardware is similar enough, you can just copy some file from one computer to another and it's supposed to work... useful if you're formatting and you wanna make sure you don't have to call MS. I found it on google, and I've never had the need to use it, but it may be worth a try.

Yeah, I think as long as you uninstall completely from the original machine, then install on the new machine it should be ok. At least that's what I'm hoping. I did that with my copy of S&T edition, and so far so good...for 4 months. Good luck.

Yes, absolutely. It's perfectly legal and possible to install a copy of MS Office on a new PC, but it can't be a copy of Office that came pre-installed on the original PC. As long as you have the MS Office CD ( not a Restore CD), and the Product Key, you can install it on any PC, though legally you need to uninstall any previous installations on any other PCs first.

Once installed, you'll need to Activate. The Activation is a combination of the Product Key and an algorithm based on the hardware. Re-installing using the same key on the same exact hardware will not use a second Activation, though a significant change to the hardware (i.e., a motherboard/processor upgrade) might. Usually, you'll be able to Activate the software a couple of times automatically over the web if need be, but if you have a problem with the Activation, just call the number on-screen and tell them you're re-installing on a new PC, and they'll give you an extra Activation.
