PowerDVD is not free AFAIK. You can download the trial version but you will have to pay for the full version. With that said, I would buy PowerDVD. I bought the full version and use it as my main player.

The important thing to remember about DVD programs is that you need a dvd decoder in order to play DVDs. On most laptops, they come installed with the software that is both the dvd player and decoder. If you uninstall Sonic, you are not only uninstalling the dvd player, but the decoder as well. As long as you have a decoder, you can use WMP/winamp/etc to play DVDs.

If you want to install Sonic and Muvee, you can download a decoder from the web. In fact most software such as PowerDVD come with their own decoder.

It is hard to find free DVD decoders that work and are free legally. The DVD standard is closed and there is a license fee. That is why Linux and Windows do not support it out of the box. I agree with the PowerDVD suggestion.

VLC also does a pretty good job on DVDs. If all you need is the decoder, get the Power DVD demo. When the demo expires, the decoder stays active and can be used with WMP.
