I tried to transfer lotta movies from my desktop over to my laptop. But the majority of them dont work.

I've tried using Windows Media player to open, it says "Acquiring codecs..., then Codecs aquired, but alll i see is a blank screen, although i can hear the sound from the movies....

Then i tried using VLC Media Player, (which normally plays all my movies on my desktop). This also doesnt work, shows a blank screen....but has sound of the movies.

Is this a compability issue with Vista and the old codecs? How do i fix this problem. Please help!!

Or are there any avi/mpegs, movie players out there that I should look into? other than Windows Media Player and VLC Media Player, I also tried Winamp, that didnt work either.

Im running Windows Vista Basic fyi.

Download DIVX media Player...it comes with a set of codecs that will also work for WMP. I think DIVX Player works great!

I'm pretty sure you can only play DIVX files with the DIVX player, not however other popular files like XVID ones.

Addtional info : Vista Business does not support some popular codecs in WMP 11, one of them is MPEG-2 which is required for playing DVDs. You have to 'buy' additional codecs through Microsoft, or install from the free resources above.

FFDshow filters will provide you nearly all the video codecs you will ever need.

I use Zoom Player for my video player.

Which I would HIGHLY recommend not using.

I'd install the latest version of FFDShow, that should play ALMOST everything.

Codec packs have the problem of installing some incompatible codecs, definitely get messy.

DivX player should be able to play any .avi files, and Quicktime will natively handle .mpg files, but WMP with the proper codecs should also handle them fine. I recommend CCCP if it is indeed available for Vista.

I suggest you install all the codec packs you can get your grubby little hands on. After all, he who dies with the most codecs dies just the same....(JK)....I use VLC or Media Player Classic and ffdshow, but I'm running XP.
