Mozilla bypasses Windows UAC for silent updates in Firefox 12 - The Inquirer
"By giving Firefox system update privileges Mozilla could make the web browser a bigger target for hackers. Mozilla has been working on avoiding the UAC pop-up by installing a Windows Firefox Service, while other possible options could have been to move the installation folder out of the parent Program Files folder.
I'm switching to Chrome or Opera. I don't like the sound of this.

Did you read the comment at the bottom of the page on that link? Seems that the update wasn't so silent after all.

It definently does not bypass UAC (Atleast it didn't for me). Mine updated and come up with UAC and what-not. Certainly wasn't silent, either.

Well, Chrome already does this, essentially. By installing itself in a user folder (I really hate it when programs do this, but that's another story), it doesn't need to ask for permission to update.
See the post at the bottom of the article:

OH! Right. Awkward.

The silent update feature is included in this version. We will see how silent it actually is in the next time it gets upgraded.
