My step mom's Dell Latitude | D620 is getting a BSOD when XP begins to boot. It receives the same error when it is booted in any form of safe mode, or with the last known good config. The error reads as follows:

    *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF76A7D62, 0xF7AA1564, 0xF7AA1260)

    *** VolSnap.sys - Address F76A7D62 base at F769E000, DateStamp 480253bc

There isnt really anything that needs to be saved off the HDD, so to save a headache i tried to boot the XP restore disc to either repair or reinstall XP; but it too receives a BSOD after loading what seems like most of the system components off the disc. This error message reads as:

    *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF76130BF, 0xF7A5F208, 0xF7A5EF08)

    *** pci.sys - Address F76130BF base at F760C00, DateStamp 3b7d855c

I performed a system check through the BIOS and everything that was tested passed, so im really stumped - usually a quick reformat solves a problem like this but i cannot do even that. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

If you have a portable drive (harddrive, flash) in a usb or other port disconnected it.

    Reboot, no joy?

    Download the following

    www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso

Burn it to a cd with an iso image

Set the computer to boot from CD first in the boot order

You will (eventually) boot to a recovery console command prompt

    type
    chkdsk /r
    <enter>

Let it finish. Reboot, does it work now?

If not, you can try copying VolSnap.sys from another PC using the same service pack version to c:\windows\system32\drivers

If you manage to boot off of a CD (you can also try something like the UltimateBootCD) also try running a hard drive diagnostic on your drive - you should be able to download a free diagnostic from the website of your hard drive's manufacturer (not _Dell, but the co. that made the actual drive itself).

To my jaundiced ears, it sounds like you might have a hard drive that's in its final death throes and needs to be replaced.
