I'm looking for a simple, touch friendly* music player with a user friendly UI that just works** and isn't called iTunes.

    * Either Metro/Modern UI or desktop is OK
** WMP doesn't fully support network shares and the Xbox Music app doesn't even work

I use MediaMonkey for Metro UI and WMP for Desktop.

    I use VLC.

Small, efficient, and it plays damn near every format known to man.

That's the one I would use but since it went under...I switched to Foobar not as sexy looking as winamp since it can no longer db music update but is still a good player.

    I wouldn't call VLC small. It's over 23 MB.

True on both both you could use VLC for mp3 but that is a over kill when WMP will play it as well.

Winamp is difficult to use with touch screens, doesn't support HiDPI, and whenever I rotate between portrait and landscape orientations, the individual component windows fall apart and get scattered all over the screen.

It was an excellent program in 1999 and it was still a good program in 2004, but Winamp doesn't really hold up to 2014's demands.

But I don't want a program that plays everything, and I especially don't want a program that tries to take over a ton of file format associations by default (checking and unchecking a gazillion checkboxes with a touch screen is an exercise in frustration) - I just want a music player.

If you can figure out how to get WMP to load an M3U playlist pointing to music on an SMB share, I'm all ears :)

If all you intend to listen to is MP3 the eve VLC is overkill.

That might be long in coming as I just listen to my Car stereo and home computer as MP3 or CD with WMP or Foobar so you might have to go to a SMB forum site and ask those user what solution have they come up with.

I am using GOM player, plays video and audio files, doesn't lag. I've chosen it because you can add video with multiple subtitles and select the right one.

Foobar is an excellent, free and very flexible player ... I use it to manage a 25,000 track .FLAC collection ... plays via ASIO or WASAPI or Direct Sound ... I use WASAPI since I output to a desktop DAC ...

    Great player ...

    Download foobar2000 and optional components

    Fair enough.

I prefer VLC because it's small compared to other programs. The fact that I can load an m3u playlist from my server at work it great. Oh and it plays everything I throw at it. For my needs it's the perfect player. I totally get what you mean about ticking checkboxes on a touch screen. The thought makes me cringe. But since I use VLC in both Windows and Linux on my laptops, it's not really an issue for me as none of them have touchscreens.
